Ukraine (part of which used to be Poland) - a good place to visit?

OK, I know this is a Polish forum, but part of Ukraine was Poland, so whats it like to visit? I feel slightly fascinated by it, partly due to scare stories i've heard but i've heard some places are beautiful? I don't know too much other from a guide book I've bought, which places are worth going (Lvow, Kiev?). Do you have any trouble crossing the border from train from Krakow?

Thanks, Kieron.

I have just came back from Ukraine.
We did backpacking in Krimerian moutins, spend some time at the beach in Jalta and visited Lwow.

It was ok, but as a Polish I dont feel so much "Culture shock" becouse todays Ukraine reminds me of Poland from 1990-1995 - dirty, with crappy customers service, very bad roads, corruption, poor villages but also full of enegy and hoping for better future.

Lwow is very nice and the old town is renovated, if you go into the countryside it is like trip to the past but also very interesting...

Best wishes

Lukasz

I think that I am not a good source of information, becouse at the begining we were in the moutains where were no shops and we were eaing things from Poland and sleeping in a tent just where we found some water and flat meadow...
And then we went down to the coast which is something like Ukrainian Riviera (it looks just as neiberhoods of Monaco - green moutains with white rocks, blue sea, palms, cypress trees, hotels villas etc) and for sure is not cheap...
I can say that trains and busses are not so cheap - tickets for a "plackartny" train from Lwow to Symefropol were more than 100 zl one way, cost of the bus are even higher (so we took a Wizzair plain that flights from Lwow to Symefropol and costs 200 zl two-ways)...
1HRN=0,5 zl
Marszrutki - little busses that you get around, are cheaper (about 5 HRN - 2,5 zl per 10 km).
Gasoline 6 HRN (so 3 zl) per litre.
Poor hotel in Jalta with warm water from 17 to 22 and no water during night at all - 60 HRN (30 zl) per person per night...
Grapes - from 15 to 25 HRN/kg
Water melon - 5 HRN
Tomatoes 5HRN/kg
Botteled water 1,5 l- 4 HRN
Cheese - 40 HRN/kg
Good wine 40-50 HRN
Cheap wine 10-15 HRN
Cocacola 1 l - 7HRN

So nothing astonishing...
But as I said it was Lwow and coast so if you are visiting some small town in Carpathian foothils it can be cheaper...

I rode my Harley from Poland to Ternopol in Ukraine....my only horror story concerns the lethal condition of many of the roads , bloody big potholes , badly rutted roads , and not a alot in the way of roads signs.....On the up side , the people were wonderfull , the Police polite and helpfull ,and the beer great.....take a chance...go there....enjoy yourself....

It depends on why you want to visit it.What you are looking for.
Prices are a bit lower than in Poland.

Ternopil is really good.I was there a year ago in some sanatorium))Have u visited "Medoboru"??
U liked our Ukrainian girls??=)
Certainly,Ukrainian girls are very nice=)

I think the most beatufull Ukrainian сities are Kiev & Lvov.
They are very different...
The culture of Lvov is like Poland*s one))couse it*s not far from and maybe becouse of the history...))
Kiev is quite different))Everything is another...
There are many interesting places to visit for young people))

If Ukrainian women are so beautiful, I will need some photographic evidence to support this theory.
Purely for scientific purposes, you understand.

I would like to go to Ukraine.
I went from Lithuania to Romania and I thought it would be easy to just drive down through Ukraine.
The Poles,Lithuanians and the Romanians I spoke to all agreed that it would not be wise. Theft, bad roads, boarder stops etc..
And as I was not travelling alone we took an aeroplane instead.

Surely the sterotype of Ukrainian women stems from the fact that we only get to meet the gorgeous ones who arrive in the UK as mail-order brides. I've met quite a few over the years....

My wife and I hope to visit Zaleszczyki and Torskie in Ukraine (formerly a part of Poland) and my father's birthplace in 1911. My cousins in Poland, whom I correspond with on Skype, but have never met face to face, are expressing reluctance to accompany me to Torskie. They hint at security concerns -- one said when stopped by the police, he handed over his driver's license along with some money. Sounds like a bribe, for which action in Canada a person would be arrested. Anyone like to comment on security issues for a tourist in Ukraine, especially in the area south of Tornopil on the way to Torskie.

Thanks,
Felix Kryzanowski

I got stopped by the Police a couple of times near Ternopol , just a routine check , a good look at my Harley , a chat , then i was on my way , no bribes asked for or offered , no problems....Didn,t have any bad experiances with the Police or with anyone else....

Thanks, Wildrover, good to hear about your experiences. Have you been south down the road from Ternopil to Zaleszczyki? Apparently, from Google Earth, Torskie now touches the highway and stretches to a bend in the Dniester River. My father left Torskie in 1929, never to return. I think the fear was the Communists. I hope to return to his birthplace for him (he died 15 years ago).

Anyone know anything about Torskie?

I went only a short way down this road , i seem to remember there were a lot of deep potholes in the road , and it was badly rutted , but it was nice countryside , and the people were friendly and helpfull when i got lost....I have a good friend who lives in Tenopol , so if you want any information about the area i can ask her....
fkryzanowski   Dec 12, 08, 16:42 /  #
I would be interested in speaking with anyone who knows something about Torskie, or if you want me to go through you to your friend, then the first question would be general: Can she describe the village of Torskie, or does she have photos, or know where to look online.

Thanks,
Felix Kryzanowski

I have a good, detailed map of the entire region where the town of Torskie was before WWII. My grandfather was born in the city of Skałat, near Tarnopol. I have travelled all over Ukraine already, especially in this region. If you wish to have help while here in Poland, I run a guest house not far from the Ukrainian border. Let me know if I can assist you.

What is the name of the town where your guesthouse is located. We haven't firmed up yet where we will cross the border. Maybe we'll drop in on you. Our party will be 5 or 6 people. Can you accommodate us?

Thanks,
Felix Kryzanowski
