Has anybody heard or been a victim of Wizzair cancelling flights due in the next few months? I just had an email that my mums flight has been cancelled and then my best mate called me to say they have cancelled his flight. Of course, the premium rate number you need to call to speak to Wizzair keeps you hanging on for so long I gave up. Has anybody heard anything about this and know whats going on?

I hope this isn't the beginning of the end for my favourite airline.

Last week I priced up a flight from Liverpool to Katowice in July OR August and the price I got was over £ 200 !!

I checked again yesterday and it's gone back down to about £ 140 ????

FYI, I found out that Wizzair have cancelled their Glasgow Prestwick route as the demand simply isnt there anymore. They may reinstate it if demand picks up again

If demand picks up. How will they ascertain that? :( What buggers, that was just wrong!

Once they canceled one of my flights 15 minutes before departure time. When everyone had already checked in. Bastards! hehe

What other airlines operate from Scotland to Poland? Easyjet are my best bet. I'm flying from Krakow to Edinburgh at Xmas time but I don't know my options on the way back. I may have to take the same journey in reverse. That wouldn't be so bad.

I can't believe that, with around 20,000 Poles in and around the Aberdeen area, that there isn't a direct service from there. The figure was 25,000 before and they still didn't give it the nod. Tossers!

A lot of Polish people live in and around the Manchester area (at least 500,000) land there is no direct flight to Krakow. They all have to go through Liverpool or Leeds. SkyEurope used to do it, but Krakow's landing fees were too expensive, so now everyone suffers. Do not even ask what I call the wonderful Management Team at Krakow airport.

They deserve to be shot! Profit has really put the blinkers on people. Half a million and they can't maintain a high enough profit margin, I don't believe it. It's pretty sad really!

http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/latestnews/Ryanair-leaves--passenger s-stranded.5064479.jp, this is what we are up against.

I fear that the future may be taking us away from budget airlines and into the hands of the extortors!

I don't care much for rich drunken Brits ;)

Seriously, there needs to be a fundamental reassessment of demand.

Ryanair's flight times aren't so convenient.

Szarly, what do you mean?

You know me Seanus, just a passing flippant comment. Cheap flights harm the environment or so it is said.

Being serious for a minute I can understand Wizzair's dilemma. Their business model is based on lower margins and full flights. Their non direct costs (corporate infrastructure, operations staff, maintenance etc) are already low since that is the business model for the budget carriers. Therefore there is little room to offset falling passenger demand by making further economies there. So the thing that has to be trimmed is the direct flight costs. Little chance of reducing aircrew costs since they employ a lot of relatively cheap aircrew already. The airports have hit them with big increases in landing fees (fixed), fuel costs are up (although their hedging may offset that to some extent). There comes a point where falling passenger demand in the recession makes it uneconomic to take off unless their flight costs can be covered by big increases in the fares which makes them unattractive against the main carriers who can see some lost market share coming back and are prepared to take a short term hit on some routes. In short it's not Wizzair's fault in this case, it's just a fall in demand.

Well, they had clearly read the economic forecasts which predicted the downturn in the popularity of certain flight paths. This crisis is here for quite some time yet. I just don't see why standard users of such a service should lose out due to the incompetence of others but life is complicated.

I've flown with WizzAir several times having just paid the taxes +£1.00 great but this can't go on with falling paseger numbers.
It's just a case of basic buissiness economics, they have to cut back just the same as everyone else in order to survive the next 12 months .

Aberdeen's landing fees are quite pricey, then add in the fact that the runway is too short in terms of MTOW (maximum take-off weight) for the average Boeing 737/A320 and voila, no Polish flights.

Ryanair quite publicly came out a while ago and told Aberdeen to get lost as long as the runway remains as short as it is. :(
