It can be well paid but is hard to get into. You won't get the well paid jobs unless you can prove you have the skills they demand but you won't get the skills they demand (or proof) unless you do the job. I had to build up ten years' experience writing (professionally) and editing plus more than a decade of teaching English at high business levels before I even made it to an interview for a decent proofreading position. An alternative is to freelance but again there's the catch 22: you don't get decent clients until you've got a decent work history to show them but you don't get a decent work history until you've got decent clients. And then the work can be very much famine or feast.
The job can be (and often is) mindnumbingly tedious. But the real problem is that people who pay you well expect you to work as and when they need you to work: if that means you should have finished at 5pm but instead you finish at 5am, that's just the way it is. The longest shift I ever did was 38 hours straight.
