Teaching english in Lublin.

I am a Medical Student in Lublin and I'm interested in finding work as a English teacher. I have experience as a private language tutor and I really enjoy teaching. I've looked into teaching jobs at English schools but they tend to have contracts and strict schedules that might not fit in with school. I would prefer to find work teaching individuals or small groups and I have some questions: What would be the best way to go about finding clients for private lessons? My social circle consists mostly of students, who generally cant afford private lessons. Where would be a good place to network and advertise for lessons? What is the going rate for private lessons? I would prefer to teach 1-4 people. I'm just looking to make some extra money for school so I wouldn't charge as much. Where would be a good location for lessons. I have a large apartment downtown that i share with one roommate. Or would it be better to teach at a public place (library, cafe), or even the clients home. Thanks for any answers or advice. I would try a private language school that has corporate clients. Most of the classes are before work of after work. But I have no idea if these type of schools exist in Lublin. Otherwise, I would advertise in a local paper. You can teach at your flat, their flat, or even a cafe. It depends on the student. I have experience with all three. Cafes can be difficult due to noise or just uncontrollable conditions. Luckily I have a fancy one next to my flat that no one goes to... As far as rates you can do a search here we just had a discussion on this topic recently.

Easy and quite good way should be local editions of ads sites like gumtree, which looks like doesn't have Lublin section yet but there are similar like: http://lublin.olx.pl/about.php or electronic edition of newspapers or local ads sites - It took me about 5s to find something like this: www.lubliniak.pl DocJunior: What is the going rate for private lessons? I would prefer to teach 1-4 people. It depends If you are a native speaker, on your teaching experience etc. but I think 30-70PLN for 1h of 1:1 lessons and let's say 10-25PLN from each person If there was a group of 4 people. DocJunior: Where would be a good location for lessons. Your place or client's home. The first one should be a bit cheaper.

I lived in Lublin for four years before I moved to Puławy not far away from there, and the school where I worked was the NewEnglishSchool ul. Skłodowskiej-Curie 3 and we had a couple of medical students teaching there. To be honest they were quite sought after because they would teach medical English in the school. Lublin is a really good place to find work as a teacher as there are five large Universities with over 100,000 students looking for English tutoring and it is one of the best kept secrets in Poland...lol, not now :) I charge 50zl per hour here in Puławy and that is cheap compared to some in Lublin, but don't be greedy, you will get more students coming if you keep your prices down, rather than have one or two paying high prices. Don't bore them in the lessons either, too many teachers think they are smart taking work from The Economist and bore the souls to death over what they interpret as a good lesson. Unless requested, keep the topic lighthearted and you will soon find you will have many students come knocking on your door rather than you go searching for them. The best way that I started to find students eight years ago was to use Anonse pl, which regionalised all over Poland including Lublin. In fact I think it's free to advertise. Get the paper and cut out the little form fill it in and post it through the little yellow postboxes you see around the City. There is one outside Empik at the top of Lipowa Street opposite KFC. Thanks for the replies, a lot of really useful information. Do you have any advice in terms of curriculum. What teaching methods did the students respond to? Did you use books and guidelines or was it conversational practice? I was thinking of a more practical approach, having the students do alot of talking and correcting and explaining things along the way. I find that using a language makes it much easier to remember than studying grammar or memorizing vocabulary.

Check my post here and the best is this one (breakingnewsenglish.com) as it is up to date and very easy to edit in word, so you can make it a 2 hr lesson or 30min lesson quite easily.

Oh dear, how pathetic... to the poster and woman who answered, this sometimes happens in these forums. Psychosis, give DocJunior a try... Hmmm I haven't considered being able to make some $ teaching Eng while in med school... I know conversational Polish and have lived in the US for most of my life, so it might be a plus to be able to explain stuff in PL if need be. Does organizing such lessons really cut into your study time (aka, how is the workload for the 4-yr at MUL... which is where I'm assuming you're studying at)? Is prior teaching experience a big plus, or are there people/places that will help setting up lesson plans and the like if you've never done it before?

well you can think about giving private lessons.. not teaching in english school (whats also possible) because then its up to you how many students you have and when...

I do private lessons and I can tell you, bring some topics! People tend to run out of things to say or give short answers so you run out of topics. The first 4-5 lessons are pretty rough since your getting used to speaking and most people have to get over the shyness. Good luck though!

Cafes are OK for informal conversation 'classes'. The problem with doing classes round your place is that you have to tidy up every week and you never really get to relax for the rest of the week. Oh try charging another 20 an hour if you do the class naked. Nobody took me up on it but it shows you're flexible with the lessons
