Bad news for house self-builders in Poland (building material cost up)

My wife has just returned from Poland.

Read somewhere that the price of building materials is set to increase by as much as 100%
Due to the government increasing duty on materials.

Bit worrying as we hope to build a house in Poland.
Anyone else heard or know more about this?

I was thinking purely selfishly about my own house. But I guess it will affect all new developments.
If it's true !

Not sure how it would work though. So the government one day says "OK, we increase taxes 300% for building materials"? Or the major Polish manufacturers or importers say the same? The price should be regulated by supply-demand (in a civilized world at least).

Hi. I was talking to a designer yesterday in wroclaw, and she was also saying that there is a huge shortage of building materials. This is due to the mild winter and the fact that builders were able to continue building during the winter. This shortage has also added to the price increase.

Hi There, we also bought land in Poland and hope to start building around September 2008, it is true that building products have increased already, that with the ever decreasing value of Sterling V Zlotych, it means that building in Poland is becoming very expensive. The land that we bought last year is worth almost double what we paid for it as we are in the outskirts of the city.. Not good news i'm afraid... prices are going up in Poland however the salaries remain the same.

Hi Marcus911
Where do you think I can find the price of the land?

what do you want to know Zofia?

there are plenty of sites that will tell you what land is selling for - many of them are listed on this website

I fail to see how sterling has any affect on building materials in Poland..It just means people working in the UK will be sending / saving less...dont be blaming the British ecomony for Polands problems....how about a thought for those who live and work in Poland!..

Well Shelley it is a well known fact that there are a lot of Polish people working in the UK and being paid Sterling. I do not see anywhere in my last post that I blamed the British economy for Polands problems and my post was merely informational for those people who live and work in the UK who are intending to bring their savings back to build their own homes. In addition to this my wifes family are from Poland and we think about their situation daily, thanks for reminding me to think about them again, i'll be calling them this evening and shall pass on your concerns.

I did read something similar last year, though I thought that it was more to do with China buying up all the world's timber which was pushing the price up. Not sure if this would have an effect on all building materials though.
