Wroclaw sayes:
We all know that... this side of the Atlantic.

edit: you meant football, right ?

what the fcuk is a soccer ball ? :)

Reply:
Sorry Wroclaw, I did not mean any disrespect, it's just that on "this side of the Atlantic", it is much easier/simpler to say soccer because saying 'football' means USA/Canadian style game.

Here if I say football, I'll have 330 Million people that will not understand and I'll spend , like I have, lots of time explaining, etc. etc.. so here and on the other side of the Atlantic, by saying Soccer, there is no ambiguity right?

This soccer vs. football was OK until the Internet about 20 yrs ago. And now people from both Continents get confused,.... eh mate' :)

Pozdrawiam

Not this side of the Atlantic it doesn't. In fact, I believe Association Football is rather popular in much of Latin America (that side of the Atlantique). Language is full of ambiguities. We all just have to learn to live with them.

I used to think that way too until I moved to Europe for a few years. When I was growing up in the 1970's the US tried to have a professional (your preference for soccer or football) league here. We had all the washed up greats at the ends of their professional career. I remember going to see Pele and Franz Beckinbauer playing for the NY/NJ Cosmos. Then the league folded and disappeared. I didn't give the sport another thought until I was in my 30's and moved to Denmark in 2001.

I soon became a football junkie. The game is fantastic! It also amazed me how quickly I learned the players from all over Europe. National team games are something to behold live in the stadium.

I even had the pleasure of starting a barroom brawl in London when Arsenal and the Tottenham Hotspurs were playing each other. The two teams play very close to each other I was in a pub in "no-man's land" with supporters from each team and there was a LOT of tension in the air. One person asked me who I was for, and thinking he would be able to detect my American accent and think I was being cheeky, answered "Soccer's a girl's game isn't it?"

Anyway fists erupted, I got hit, I did some hitting, and then we were all buying each other pints and singing together 5 minutes later. I was called "Bloody Yank" for the rest of the day and was given a jersey from each team.

I like football/soccer :-)

That explains why so many footballers roll around on the floor crying when another footballer has made physical contact with them.

Cricket is very easy to understand. You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that’s in the side that’s in goes out, and when he’s out he comes in and the next man goes in until he’s out. When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

If you want the time of your life go to Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland for the finals, it is electric, you'd never go back to BASEBALL OR CRICKET.
