Whats the best city/town in Poland for A)holidays B)living

Holidays - depends what you like. If mountains - Zakopane area, if water - Mazury or Tri-city area.

Living - depends again what you prefer.

For a visit, The Old Town in Warsaw is always nice when the weather is nice and you can go for a stroll. The centre of Gdansk is a bit cold and wet in winter but is pretty otherwise, well, you would expect it to be wet as the word Gdansk comes from the old Polish word for wet. However, to live, I would not recommend anywhere. You would be bored out of your brains after a week.

Is that because there are so many things to choose from and you may never make up your mind ?

No it is because every time I go back to Poland it is exciting as I travel to the airport and I travel on a plan, go through security but then on the other side, on the main road towards Warsaw, again, reality sets in and I think to myself, 'oh my God, what have I done by coming back here again?' I see all those concrete bridges and all those bill boards and, well, it makes me cringe just to think about it...

Then why go??? Save your money and go somewhere you like! I can assure you - Poland can do without you!

I don't know about living but for holidays it obviously depends on what you're looking for. Warsaw is probably good for a first time visit but then again, there's so much in all the cities...I would pick somewhere in the Tricity because I am a girl who likes the ocean and likes to be near it!

Not like good old Tesco...

Hm, if this confused hate-filled creature hates Poland for the fact that there are concrete bridges and billboards in the country, then it should hate practically every other European country.

exactly. I live in Scotland and can't help but see concrete bridges and billboards. I'm pretty much stumped as to what he expects bridges to be built of actually? Straws? Polystyrene?

- A) Zakopane (and Tatra Mountains), Sopot, Krakow, Mazury (lots of lakes), Bieszczady Mountains
B) Wroclaw, Poznan; Krakow; Jelenia Gora; Karpacz; and scores of others; Warszawa is too expensive ... if you care about matters like that

Erm, didn't you say that the last time you visited Poland was in the 80's?

Thanks for replies everyone, but lets lay off Michal, he is entitled to his opinion.
And lets no overreact, he didn't say he hated Poland, he just said that he finds it boring.

My fiancee and sister went to Gdansk yesterday, I would have liked to go but I couldn't get holidays from work.
I found Poland very exciting the first time I went, the 2nd time I went to Zakopane which was good for a number of days but I think we stayed too long as I was bored after a few days. Skiing and mountains aren't really that exciting for me to do it for a week.

The third time, we just went to my girlfriends town for XMAS, it was very boring because the gym had gone bankrupt and moved to poznan and there wasn't much for me to do, although her dad tried hard in fairness to him, took me to see the gigantic cathedral and a few other things. Not as impressive as Rome, but still very impressive.

I don't really want to go back to visit my girlfriends family home so much, there are other places I would like to see like Spain, Greece, Egypt.
I can think of some interesting things I would like to do in Poland such as visit Auschwitz etc., but its not really a possibility due to her family obligations. I coudln't even really get a chance to explore Warsaw, I'm sure ye know why.

So after xmas, I decided to stop visiting Poland for a while.
But we will get married there next year so it won't be for too long :-)

Puzzler, I'm not sure if your 1st or 2nd generation Polish, what city would you recommend for a non-native if he decided he would like to move to Poland in the future?

with respect danny boy, Michal seems to hate a lot of things about the Polish and many members of this forum......read back on posts.....

This is a Polish Forum not a hate Forum and if Michal could remember that and post more positively then I am sure he would not be facing any back lash. This has gone on for a long time.......

he sure is entitled to his opinion but if you read over his many, many posts then you'll see that he does seem to dislike Poland (despite visiting it often) and Polish people. He posts upsetting things often and then argues with people who disagree with him. Its like a hobby.

As for yourself. You don't seem over impressed with Poland either. You maybe should have made the effort to get to Gdansk as nothing else has apparently tickled your pickle!

I do understand what your saying about the hatred thing tho, all the petty bickering does my head in too, thats why I started this thread, to get away from that.

I did "make the effort" to get to Gdansk, I couldn't go because of work obligations.

As i wrote above, I did find other things in Poland interesting. If you reread it, you'll see that I said I was bored when I was staying with my girlfriend's family.
I'm sure if I had a chance to hop on a train and travel around a bit, I would have a great time, but I have to know where to visit first - the reason for this thread.

In fact there is a very nice Tesco in Warsaw. I do not remember the metro name but it is on the very end of the line. Anybody knowing the metro in Warsaw will know where it is. A very good selection of almost everything in fact I even bought a can of beer and a bottle opener there.

If you understand little of the language and you are out in the countryside then you will find it very boring indeed.

Listen to the donkey. Tesco is the evil empire. Beware. Use markets, local shops, anything but Tesco.

Unless, of course you are on a world tour of every Tesco's store. Then you will have no choice than to go to Poland on the way.

Enjoy it while you can. I believe there is a Tesco in hell where the devil himself buys overpackaged vegetables and looks for the special offers.
