I would love to visit the little Buddhist Kingdom in the Himilaya's but they charge a HUGE TOURIST TAX!
Make them stop and I'll visit and be your friend.

President?
Doesn't the King have absolute power in Bhutan?

Advice about living and working in Britain:
Do it as soon as you can because the government is restricting immigration more each month. Especially for non EU members.
Over the last few years we Brits have had a huge influx of migrant workers. Despite many Brits (like myself) feeling this has made our country the most exciting it's ever been - there are many who are fanatically anti-immigration and the government is starting to try and win some votes by acting tough on immigration.

Many Brits have a thinly disguised racism that sometimes makes me ashamed to call them my countrymen. Far more enjoy the variety of cultures now living in every area but it is the loud mmouthed fool shouting abuse that innevitably creates the most memorable impression.
A case of the unsilent minority drowning out the goodwill of the quiet majority.

I hope you find a way to get here. I have never met a Bhutanese before.

Is it true that Bhutanese marijuana grows all over?

I spent time in many area's and 'sampled' Manali charas, Kerala Sensimilia, Thai stick, Pakistani Chitral, Afghan Masada-I-Sharif, Morrocan double zero, lebenese blonde, Nepales attar But I have never had the opportunity to try Durban Poison, Hawiian weed, Congolese (the strongest wild grown on earth) or Bhutanese bud (known amongst experienced tokers for containing another mindaltering chemical to the usual THC).

In Martin Booths 'Cannabis: A History' he speaks very 'highly' (poor joke) about the feelings evoked by Bhutanese smoke.

At this point I feel I should mention that I'm not a full time pot-head. I do have interests and hobbies that force soft drugs into a rare indulgence.

Hi Bhutanese lady!!!

I just went to Bhutan in January!
What an amazing place. And I've always had a huge crush on the Fourth King! LOL! ;-)

I was going to drive from Paro to Samdrup Jongkhar, but then the bombs went off, and the trip was cut short. In retrospect, that was a stupid decision, but hey, I got a refund for my unused days.

So instead, we drove from Thimphu to Phuentsholing.
I'm planning to return to Bhutan soon! Bring on the ema datse! The hotter the better!

:-)))

165 USD per day, for a single traveler, groups are a bit cheaper.
Mine was also a bit cheaper because I went there in the low season.

But doing it solo is definitely the best way to go, you can stop along the way as much as you want, and nobody's kvetching.

The company I used was OK, Bhutanese owned, with offices in the UK and Thimphu, but I definitely want to try a different one next time. Also Bhutanese, and not a foreign operator, if I'm gonna spend that much money, I want the locals to benefit.

However, when compared to other guides I saw along the way, mine were excellent!
As a solo traveler, I had a driver and a guide all to myself, and it was kinda fun to have two men wait on me hand and foot.

They also have lady guides in the country, not many, maybe only 15 of them so far, but more and more girls want to get into that line of work.

Send me a PM if you want more info - I'm just writing an article on Bhutan for a travel magazine.

Sorry, I forgot to add above that the daily fee includes all your expenses: hotel (western standard, hot water, flush toilet, etc.), food (breakfast, lunch, dinner), transport within Bhutan, entrance fees where necessary, and of course an English speaking guide and a driver.

Basically, the only things extra are drinks (soft drinks and alcohol) and souvenirs.

So when you think about it like that, then the per day fee is not so outrageous anymore.
