it is an urban legend. Intelligence doesn't depend on the place one comes from and was intended to be an isnult. We all know that. It is like saying that some ethnic groups are less intelligent than other groups. I hate racist remarks. yes ok, i will give you a sporting example as thats my area. This is only my point of view and the views of others i have discussed it with.

Ok so here goes, i watched closely the african cup of nations this year and was dogged the whole time by one thought, 'why don't they use their footballing brains'. It kept cropping up again and again and i wasn't the only one to point out that african players seemed not to have the 'footballing brain' and i'm not talking about talent here.

So after noticing that in the african cup of nations i looked out for it again while watching the Premiership, SA and La Liga. I hpe you understand what i mean by footballing brain, for example, timing of runs, when to pass, when to shoot, calling for the ball and general on field decision making.

So there i am watching, Drogba, Geremi, Toure, Adebayour etc etc and noticing these sorts of things happening again and again. so to compare the African players brain to say a continental european players brain, in footballing terms can be done. Generally the decision making of these players, your, Maldini's, Gerrad's, Totti's and the like have better 'footballing brains' therefore making them cleverer than the African players.

Let me just say again i'm not saying that the african players are not skilled or don't have ability just hat their footballing brains do not work as well as other 'ethnic groups'

Not only is that a simplistic example it's also a bunch of hogwash. This sporting insult to Black intelligence is not new. Since sports have become globalized and integrated the line has always been "White Athletes are smarter, Black Athletes have 'natural, inherit, God-given athletic ability.'" It's fooey. It's a white rationalization on why they're getting beat at the sports they invented.

You're not a racist, Tornado, I don't use that word lightly and I wouldn't lob it your way, but that is some flawed thinking, however it is shared by many. I can't speak much for European Football but some of the greatest Black baseball players were maligned in their heyday as being "naturally talented, but not 'baseball smart.'" You can't be as great as Hank Aaron and Willie Mays were without inherent "baseball intelligence." This is the same line of thinking that keeps blacks from being quarterbacks in American football.

I'm extrapolating here because I'm not in expert in world football but perhaps the way the African teams played seemed different because they learned the same game a different way. What I mean is that, an African fan might watch a European team and note what he thinks to be poor form because he was taught football in the African mold.

When the Canadians invented hockey in the late 1800s, it went through many rule changes and incarnations that were designed to make the game better, but the Canadians naturally held on to some of the bad habits the new rules were designed to remove. When the Soviets picked up hockey in the 1950's they didn't start with those bad habits so their game became superior quickly. Is this to say that the Canadians had poor "hockey smarts" or that the Russians were "hockey geniuses?" Of course not, it was just a different way. I'd be careful before labeling such subjective things as unintelligent.

By the way, who won those matches you were talking about?

The ones that have better access to education have better chances of being more 'intelligent' but I don't think that it is an inherent quality.

Exactly, Mali, there's nothing inherent about it. Before slavery and imperialism when everything was on an even keel there were great civilizations of learning in all cultures. Not just Europe.

True. Although I believe that slavery was involved in building many of these civilizations. However, it was from within so it was a class thing rather than a racial thing (not that that makes slavery any better)
