Don't know about clothing imports but there is more than one level of sales tax here. Next time you go to your local shop, have a look at the receipt. I don't have one in front of me right now, but remember that they show different amounts, usually at the bottom of the list by the total. Staple foods are taxed at a lower rate than say, pesto or chocolate.

Cheers Jonni, yea i noticed that the other day, and also that i was being charged for the bottle the beer came in :-) Have now started collecting these!

Its a steep learning curve, i only moved over 2 weeks ago, been trying to get the missus to investigate some of this for me, but its a slow process... :)

thanks again,

Try to keep the receipts for beer. Some shops have started asking to see them when you take the empties back. It isn't usually a problem if the staff know you, but if they don't, they may well ask for proof you bought the beer there.

When I lived in Poznań (before the ban on outdoor drinking) there used to be a little old lady who sat in the main square and collected the empties to get the cash for them.

I'm too lazy to remember to take them back, and have a cupboard in the kitchen that I daren't open for fear of a deluge of bottles.

Hahahahaaa, we have the same cupboard situation! I lived in thailand for a bit and the thais used to hang around the beach snatching the empty bottle as you swigged the last drop! Always made me smile.....

Perhaps i have found a new vocation :-)

VAT is 22% on clothes, except baby clothes which are 7%.

Duty depends on the type of item and where it is coming from - get a Polish friend to check the Urzad Celny's webpages. Typically if from China or India it can be 10-15% but many products are totally exempt.

From the EU there is no import tax.

That's the EU 'luxury goods' VAT rule coming into play - that maddeningly seems to be interpreted differently according to where you are.

To the original poster - be warned, you'll have to pay VAT and duty when the goods arrive in Poland, and the VAT threshold is way, way lower than it is in the UK. Currently it's 50,000PLN, though there are discussions about raising it to 100,000PLN or higher.

You're not thinking about importing "Hugo Doss" or "LaCoast", commonly seen on dodgy markets? ;)
