Bydgoszcz - Poland's Great Secret

Hey... what is it with Bydgoszcz? Seems like Poland's best kept secret. I just read a English magazine article (in hidden europe) that makes Bydgoszcz sound hipper than Liverpool, more beautiful than Paris, sexier than Sopot and cooler than Krakow.

Bydgoszcz is a gritty sort of place. You’ll still scuff your shoes on the dust as you walk through town on the footpath that hugs the bank of the Brda river. But Bydgoszcz is all the better for having never quite been tamed.

See URL. It's in the September 2007 issue of the mag and on their website.

Nothing wrong with Bydgoszcz at all. Great nightclubs, Poland's best bit of street art (in the Crossing the River sculpture - on the Brda in the middle of town). Lively. Even an airport!

nothing wrong with bydgoszcz and it looks set to have a good future, but to say its hipper than Llverpool, more beautiful than paris, sexier than sopot and cooler than krakow is stretching the truth just a little i believe most would agree...

did you read the article?

The town square is nice, and there are good places to eat.

I read the article and I think they've got it so very right. There is something special about Bydgoszcz. And they really catch the flavor of the place.... breakfast at Adam Sowa's, hanging out on the steps of the old Kaskada cafe, the monument in the square where the Jesuit church used to be, the post office. I love Bydgoszcz. Best bit in the Hidden Europe magazine article is when they talk about smalec. Anyway, I dream of the town on the Brda.

I am pleased to hear that it is one of Poland's little secrets and I for one will take legal action if necessary to protect everybody from the secret from ever getting out. Somehow Bydgoszcz reminds me of New York's night life, only in the case of Bydgoszcz at least at night you can not see the bloody rotten place! I do indeed know this town very well and quite franclly, it is
awful! A nasty horrible town with no soul whatsoever. Nasty dreary streets with by far the worst streets in Poland to drive on. I always knew when I got within the city's limits as my poor little car started to shudder. Very rarely did I visit such a God forsaken place in Poland and I have been to some real nasty pits but Bydgoszcz was by far the worst disappointment in my life.

Actually, the girl I knew was quite nice there and in fact her friend was a real stunner! However, the town itself was dreary. I am sorry if I have offended any Bydgoszcz fan though. Obviously, I was talking about the streets and houses and the dirt not about the Polish young themselves.

No idea. I was in Bydgoszcz only once years ago but there are pubs opened until late at night usually even in very small towns, so there can't be problems with such things in Bydgoszcz.

Bydgoszcz is a lovely town, it hasn't been corrupted by English/Irish opportunist (yet)
No stag parties/no foreign low lifes morons using the place as a spiting place.
I would never live in lodz, although our Real Estate experts are setting it up as the new boom city. hmmmm

and once again, any places worth going in Bydgoszcz(clubs/bars/pubs)?

Kredens pub is the best bar / pub in Bydgoszcz, with great atmosphere and decor..... very good ;) or maybe a smaller place the called the Amsterdam pub.

I have been there several times, never had any problems, very friendly open.... maybe not as many speak English as other parts of Poland, but its fine.... it made me practice my Polish more :)

mother makes an extremely delicious gooseberry fool - are you perhaps related

I think not. I come from an old Irish lines of fruit fools. You may have heard of our family song:

"As I was coming over, The Cork and Berry Mountains......."

Sadly no. I wish I had some of his writing talent though. That novel is brilliant.
