Camping in Poland - are there any laws?

Hi all, i am new to this forum and appologise if this question has been posted before! I am thinking about coming to Poland for 8 days in September 2008 but since i have read so much about the wonderful scenery i though about taking a tent instead of booking in to a hotel or hostel and was hoping someone could advise on the law regarding wild camping, i hope to arrive in Krakow and make my way to Slupsk in the north.

the only problem I see with camping in September is the weather. It is not that warm anymore but I guess it is worth talking a risk if you are weather proof Scot:).

I don't really think one is allowed to camp outside ot designated areas in Poland unless it is a private property.

I know Polish winters are harsh - but can you imagine how we feel reading the threads about the summer temp in Pl ?
It hit a high of 17c here today - woohoo !

You can camp at my place for free....no rules apart from don,t burn the forest down...I am on route to Slupsk..

the most important law is to enjoy it and have fun... if you don't, you get deported...

Hi miranda, As i am a Scot i dont think the weather would be much of a problem and it would feel just like being back home except for the wonderful scenery and nicer looking ladies. I think vodka would help eliminate the weather factor lol

hi polishgirltx, I fully intend to enjoy every part of my journey and see as much of poland as i can whether it be good or bad - it all adds to the experience, life would be boring if it all went smoothly and i am not planning on getting deported but then again i have never been deported from another country so i might give it a try ( only Joking lol)

Not a problem here..i have a proper place for camp fires , and plenty of indoor room if the weather gets too bad , be happy to join you for some beer and Polish sausage round the camp fire....You will be welcome....

then you are set to go then. I am sure you gonna have a blast. Slupsk is a nice city too and you might consider catching 2 hour train ride to tri- city (Sopot, Gdansk, Gdynia) for a day trip if you are not driving.
I recommend renting a car in Poland, with carrying a tent and all that it would just make sense.

My ex girlfriend was born in cape wrath....gets a bit chilly up that way she tells me....

Are camper vans a big thing in Poland? would be a great idea in this part of the world:)

Are you mad? It's a sh!thole! I was there the week before last for five days. Admittedly it's a lot better than it was when I lived there for a year (12 years ago) but the word 'nice' is a hell of a long way off!

no, I am not mad Harry. Are you? If you want to bash Slupsk why don't you create a new thread. I had a good time there, so even if it was a .............. I think that it is people who make the place.

I was lucky enough to visit 3 Polish families, in their homes, and each family treated my friends and I, like royalty.

Me too. I have some good friends in Slupsk.

Been to Slupsk a few times..nothing really special about the place...but certainly not a sh*thole...

Only when you are there. Otherwise It's just a hole.

I've also got some very good friends in Slupsk. But those are some of the people who live there, not the place itself.

And having lived there for a year, I think I might just know the place a tiny bit better than a couple of tourists know it.


Compare it to the places nearby (Bytow, Ustka, Leba, Lebork, Kartuzy, Darlowo, etc), those are special places. But despite Slupsk having the same natural advantages of those places, it's nothing like as nice as them.

Hopefully the ending of the conscript system will further improve the town and they'll be smart enough to keep the current Mayor. The only problem is going to be the attitude of the EU to the SEZ in Slupsk.

Thanks to everone who posted a comment and suggested places to visit i will certainly try and visit as many places as i can and i think miranda and BubbaWoo were refering to my original question regarding camping rather than the place itself.

I agree it is the people who make the place lovely and enjoyable not the place itself - i have decided to reserve judgement untill i have been rather than dictate my visits on negative comments.

I am partial to a bit of camping when i`m with a good woman!!!! LOL Omly one meaning!!!!

No reason not to stealth camp Steve. I mostly use a hammock (mozzie net a must) but tent in winter.
State owned forests are the go, away from the path - and I have had a tent tea leafed in the Tatras - some Gorals have light fingers...
Don't trespass, or if you do, stay out of sight of any housing amd bunk down late, the old rule. I only start fires in huge forests LOL, as am unlikely to get nabbed. Most rangers knock off at 5, after that you should be sweet for a homely smallish fire.

Jealous as hell of your trip.

What is likely to happen if i do happen to get nabbed by a ranger - arrested, deported or just shot?

Polish rangers are very businesslike but polite, and use a bit of common - make bloody sure you're not nabbed in the Ustka polygon though - or other army land. They still act like communists and can't see it for what it is - a bit of healthy rambling.

How much (Approx) would it cost to get to Gdansk from Krakow on the train and then from Gdansk to Hel or could i get a train straight to Hel ( i could say i`ve been to hell and back without lying - LOL) and then work my way back to Krakow and camp on the way back.

I think it cost me arond £25 but prices (exchange rate ) has gone up a bit since then. I enjoyed the train journey - great way of meeting people and seeing the country.
Dont think you would get a train all the way to Hel. Stay over at least one night in Sopot, they have a campsite there too.
