The Changing Face of Scotland - we need more immigrants!

I was interested in this article in the Daily Record. I find it worrying, but at least get to show it to the people at work who want 'all immigrants to go home.'

I haven't read the Daily Record since I was a bored newsagent at lunchtime 9 years ago.
I might give that cyber-version a read.

edit: Now I've read it, my conclusions are, either immigration, or they should put some sort of aphrodisiac in the water and encourage everyone to breed like bunnies.

That made me laugh out loud.

It's too cold in Scotland - that's why I moved south of the border :)

Thanks for the link Sofi. I have posted about it a couple of times in response to "Britain this and Britain that". I keep trying to say that the picture in Scotland is different to that than the rest of the UK. This is why the Scottish government is trying to encourage immigrants rather than the English based parties who try to score points with anti immigration ticket.

It's worrying that the amount of people who have left Scotland (and plan to in the future) causes enough concern that research has been done into how Scotland will "fail" without some kind of boost in population. If that boost comes from "immigrants" then so be it. Anti-Polish or anti-immigrant feelings don't run as highly in Scotland as they do elsewhere in the UK so Scotland would accept immigrants as a partial help to the boost.

They do in the big cities and youd better believe it, I have lots of connections still to Edinburgh and there is a definate undercurrent of " oh yes,nice enough people,but to many of them",Im sure this is the same in other areas of higher level imigration.The fact it seems wider spread in England is that generally Poles are in more English towns and cities and in larger numbers,wait till little towns in scotland,reliant on seasonal work suddenly play host to a few thousand outsiders ready to take those jobs for min wage and dodgyier conditions and attitudes will soon come into line with the rest of UK.

I think people are starting to get fed up of Poles in Scotland as well. It's sad but true. One just has to wander around the Polish ghetto in Edinburgh, around Leith Walk, to see how they cut themselves off and want nothing to do with integrating, unless they have to pour you a pint or serve you in Lidl!

Integration with what ?

The local community,I can back up that other guys comments about edinburgh ,according to freinds and familiy that is the cases,there is almost no mingling with locals or attempts to intergrate into a local way of life. This rosy picture of enland being an evil polonophobic place and scotland a happy clappy welcome mat is turning into tosh as Scots are getting cheased off being told they have to intergrate with newcomers and newcomers arnt bothering to return the gesture.

Just integrating Man! I have lived in poland for 5 years and I believe in the 'when in Rome...' syndrome. When i'm back in Uk I have yet to meet a Pole who wants to meet locals, talk to them, socialise etc. they are either really suspicious or want to know what you cando to help them. By the way my Polish is pretty good.

OK so let's say that in a few moths I will go to Scotland, find a job, sign a year long contract and... why the hell would I want "to intergrate into a local way of life" ? To wear a skirt ?

Talk to people, socialise. That sort of thing.
You don't need to chase down and beat haggises to death with bagpipes and shortbread (although the whisky can make you do that if you're not careful).

You should definitely worry about haggis (sorry if I butchered the spelling) more than kilts....

I don't understand the whole "integration" issue, I really have more understanding even for "they steal our jobs" idiots. In next year we will start importing Chinese workers to build roads, stadiums and other things in Poland and I don't give a damn If they will be trying to "integrate" with us. Do your job well, that's all I want from them.

It's not so much the people who are there temporarily, it is the people immigrate and settle. Communities that are seperated from the rest of society naturally have more problems. Divisions between people in society don't do any good.

And how many Poles "immigrate and settle" ? If PLN/GDP exchange rate is going to change in the same direction then you will see 80% of them going out within next few years.

But on a serious note, who gives a damn. Keep tradition, make friends, and be kind to each other. That's all that matters. You shouldn't have to integrate to be welcome somewhere.
