It is a fairly common name....
We have some strange, overreacting legal rules protecting privicy. Shortly it is illigal to make personal data available to public without individual's consent. Many people seem to enjoy and enforce this rulling. Apartment's intercom (entry phone) would often list only apartment's numbers and no names. Phone company TPSA...and this is strange is charging a fee for your name and number to BE... listed.

Thanks Kowalski! I knew there were some privacy issues but I wasn't sure why? What part of Poland do you reside in?

There was somebody in your family whose name was Peter or Piotr. Since the name of St. Peter was popular to have in that area and simply there were too many sons of different Peters to figure who was who some were given names Piotrowski, Piotrkowski, Pietras and Petrowroski or Pietrowski. The name was given usually by a priest who was the only one who could write into parish books (books of births, books of married, books of dead) The data was later used by state administration to create its own database for military conscript, taxes, IDs, etc.

Hi Jola,
From what I understand, it justs means that there are 60 Leszczynskis currently living in Poland, which would not make it a very common name. I could be wrong on this, since I don't understand how to read Polish, but that is how I interpret the website.

Unflattering nickname for a self-satisfied or high-blown person......from a derivative of pycha ‘conceit’, ‘overweening pride’.

Nice!! I was hoping for something a little more exotic!! It states his birthplace as Brodnica. Do you know if that is a big place or small town? I am going to Poland in a few weeks, but to Wroclaw. This will be my first visit to Poland, I cant wait to see everything. Thank you for your translation

Thank you for your warm welcome. Maybe it will be easier to trace records if I am dealing with a small place. Its hard when you dont speak the language and dont have much to go on!! I must do more investigating. I have only just started, and arent doing to bad so far. Does anyone know if they hold records in the local churches?I have my great grandfathers name, and apparently he was a farmer. I have been told that many of the family perished in a concentration camp.
