Cooked Fruit in Poland - Fruity Fillings, Flan, Pies, Tarts and JAM

I visited my friendly local delicatessen recently. Alongside the French conserves and English jams, I found a couple of different jars of Polish dżem. I had to buy some. I haven't actually opened it yet. That will happen tomorrow morning when I start my second course at breakfast time.

But so far, I can say that it's a cherry jam, it's low in sugar (assuming I understand niskosłodzony correctly), it looks like it has really big chunks of fruit in it. I think I'll probably have it on toast, but possibly just on buttered bread. Fascinating stuff this, isn't it?

Dżem is an interesting word. (Stop yawning, you!) The English word Jam has obscure origins, it may come from the French "J'aime", and now variants of this word are found in various different languages. I guessed from the start that "Dżem" is not a particularly Slavic word.

If anyone has anything to say about POLISH jam, please do so here. If it's not Polish jam, then keep your thoughts to yourself please!

well, most of them are really good. What is the make. Some brands are better than others:)

Dzem z czarnej pozeczki- Blackcurrent Jam, is by far my favorite

I would also recommend wielowocowe, that is, a mix of fruits, usually blueberry, strawberry and rasberry.
Try putting some of the blackcurrent jam on a piece of buttered toast with your morning coffee...

that is my favourite too - how did you know:D I also like and strongly recommend to you Osiol any kind of Polish made Powidła - plum butter - it is to die for. Cannot recommend the brand at present but the darker it is the better.

Actually, my 3rd favorite is the Plum butter as well (the name doesn't do it justice) I believe Łowicz makes it as well, Osiol, I recommend you buy it next time...

hmm, now that you mention it, I joined exactly one year after you did.. Nov 13th : ) All these strange coincidences, haha

There were two different Polish jams on sale in the shop. The other was blackcurrant. I also like blackcurrant, but there was already a very good English Blackcurrant and Elderberry Port conserve in my cupboard so I chose the cherry instead.

As with all the proper food shops I frequent, I know the people who run this deli quite well, so I will suggest to them that they get some Plum butter in stock. The only problem they have is that they are in a town with very few Polish people. The few there are probably don't think too much about setting foot in a shop that is quite expensive. Perhaps they could follow the example of my local Costcutter - a big handmade sign saying 'Najlepsza Polska Żywność!'

Strangely, on my trips to Poland, I haven't tried or even been offered any jam.

I shall let you all know how I get on with this stuff tomorrow.

I had some Strawberry the other day, not my choice, I like the Hartleys or Robertsons Raspberry, the kind with the seeds ( or is it pips ? ) in.
Whatever it was it didn't taste so good. I'm off to have a google and find out the make. Back in a mo................

The strawberry (Fragaria spp.) pips don't get stuck in your teeth like Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) pips do. They are evil.

My favourite has always been Damson Jam but the jam that is sold at the Polish food shop I'm sure is 'Krakus'.
(will have to go and check the label now <g>)

I also like blueberry jam made of course with Polish blueberries lol.........

Tough, but I think its a 2 way tie between Wielowocowe, so a mixture of berries usually, or strawberry-rhubarb.

My grandmother makes the best strawberry dzem (when its in season anyways) but I guess that doesn't help you :(

Back to the thread, try Łowicz, it produces some very tasty jams, they don't produce only jams but they excel in this area

Osiol - there is another kind of paczki filling - made of rose petals and sugar and it is a raw(not cooked) speciality.
I had some really good jam made of quince and rose petals from Bulgaria. Sorry I am off topic. Is this exclusively thread for Polish jam ?

PS. I like orange jam and I had some made of ginger I belive but the wirdest one I had was made from carrots:). I guess I am a jam Mama.
