Poles - what other nationality would you say you are most like?

Germans have more than dirty hands in Greece in the very recent past. Don't forget Mercedes Benz and Deutsche Telekom and their recent bribery scandals there ;-)

Sure we have dirty hands...from all that work....Greeks should try it sometimes!

I've often heard it said that the Poles and Irish are similar and I agree to an extent - I think the Irish are certainly more similar to the Polish than most other Europeans anyway.

Norman Davies once wrote:

"Poland and Ireland are the only two Catholic countries which thrive on a diet of potatoes and hard spirit."

Corruption in Germany takes place only in the highest levels while in Greece it is widespread in every level horizontally and vertically.I didn't like at all the Hungarian attitude to tourists and how they extract money. It is the same with primitive Turkish crookery where the person pretends ignorance.Slavic crooks are much more refined and even Ukrainians who rob you blatant were not so annoying like the Hungarians. As a Greek I know when they deceive me but I turn blind eye if it is done properly and tactfully.

Turks and Magyars are cousins and two nations are aware of that fact.

Other comments are just a speculation.

The word "Hungarian" is thought to be derived from the Bulgar-Turkic Onogur, possibly because the Magyars were neighbours (or confederates) of the Empire of the Onogurs in the 6th century, whose leading tribal union was called the "Onogurs" (meaning "ten tribes" or "ten arrows" in Old Turkic; see below)

I would say Poles are like English, French, USA and Spanish to the lesser degree - in general !

Judging from their mentality this comes hardly as a surprise.

Just an observation of mine with a hint of generalization since that is the name of the game on PF;)
Poles are bit like French in the sense that both tend to take themselves very seriously and lack the ability to laugh at themselves.

Many Poles are similar to Scots but the Eastern European mentality is a bit different. I wonder how Scottish and Polish Catholics would get on. I don't think religion would be a huge factor but one nonetheless.

I think that this whole discussion is crap. People are individuals.

In a nutshell, that's right! Some Poles like some Scots. Some Poles like some Germans. It makes no sense comparing nations too much.

I guess we just know we're different... It seems Czechs have different character and mentality... We like them, but... Poles drink vodka and Czechs drink beer, you know xD
Czechs are more pragmatic, I think, Poles are hot heads

I agree with you somehow

On the comparing Poles to Irish, I'm not sure how it is in America but Irish Americans (ones that have been here for generations) tend to be VERY racist towards Slavs and Italians. They have this weird mentality of "We immigrated here before you so we are better" and believe Irish Catholicism far outweighs Polish or Roman

Also I've found this argument incredibly amusing except for Southern and his pro Greek racism and blatant ignorance of the fact that the socialist Greek state is falling on its ass (and that the only real industry in Greece is tourism... which he insulted other countries for)

Arrbol,

The Irish are without doubt the ones to have a night out with. I consider them to be the most fun to be with, friendly and gregarious. Sit in an Irish pub, and within the hour, musicians will appear from nowhere, in another hour, everyone is singing their their heads off. At closing time the landlord closes the curtains and locks the front door, then he lowers the lights. You're in for a good night.

I have traveled across Ireland, north and south, east to west, and found the same sense of fun everywhere I've been. Why do you think there are Irish bars all over the world? Because of the fun they generate !

This is in direct contrast to the Polish who never seem to enjoy themselves, and always look so miserable. Forget the big cities, go to the small towns and villages, and you can see misery everywhere, written on their faces. Seems to me, they want to drink as much as they can in the shortest time possible until they are legless and incoherent. Then they become a bore to be with. Why are, the Polish so miserable?

Sounds like my local back home.

Wouldn't you be if you live there,in one of those towns. Even driving through them I feel so depressed, but you have to stay focused so that you don't knock down a drunk falling in the middle of the road. I met Poles in Ireland from towns like these and they moaned the whole time they were in Ireland (about having nothing to do) and wanted nothing more than to go back to these towns. It's a funny world.

As a Hungarian having worked with Polish I would say that the Polish are much calmer.

Ireland was much more friendlier for me. But Poles are much nicer. not friendly , but NICE and GENEROUS.
sometimes friendly is good, and inviting.... but phony. but at the end of the day NICE has more substance. and is more reliable. Irish whisky is better than anything .. incl vodka.

Spaniards and Dutches? No way ...

Poles are conservative and right-winged for the most, sure they don't match with the above mentioned folks ...

Absolutely! Spaniards are the opposite of Poles and as to the Dutch, although not very "merry", there are not conservatives.

Poles are more similar to other central and Eastern peoples rather than Westerners - common sense ! ;)

Yeah - as if football existed in Poland!

Actually yes, speedway does exist in Germany. If You know what "Falubaz" is then ask uncle Google about german speedway team "Wolfslake Berlin" :D

As to the topic. I believe we are similar to Hungarians. Maybe not by the looks but our shared history had bonded us in the past. I do disslike the sound of the Hungarian language though. To me it's like "gypsy talk" somehow. No offence. Still can't decide which is worse: Hungarian or German (Gypsy Talk vs Barbed Wire Pushed Down The Throat). :D

I disagree about the comments that Poles are like the Irish. I think Poles are more likely to stand their ground (the Irish seem to give in just to be liked). Also I must have had bad luck with some of the Irish I've met -- the few I met seemed nice but they just asked too many dumb questions/or made silly comments about Poland.

Agree that Poles and Irish are not alike. It's not that the Irish give in, in order to be liked, but Irish people dislike confrontation. They're an easy-going people not as irritable and impatient as Poles. Also the Irish tend to see humour in everyday situations n a way that Poles don't. Poles tend to get annoyed by things which an Irish person would find amusing.

I think that Poles are quite similar to people from Alabama/Kansas/Etc in USA (What is great!)

And also quite similar to people from the south of Brazil/Argentina, and diametrically different the rest of Brazilians/Mexicans/etc (what is also good in many points).
