How could things have gone so wrong (Poland church dress code)

I was dragged along to Church this Easter and just happened to be wearing shorts, as the weather dictated. As soon as I walked into the Church, I was greeted with an extremely frosty reception, old ladies tutting, stares and a good telling off during my exiting the building. All the while, 2 pews across from me was sat a woman who I can only describe as being dressed like a S**t, as the weather dictated. She, as can be predicted, didnt receive the same reception as myself.

What has the Church come to when, during the time we commemorate the death of our Lord Jesus, all people are concerned about is whether my legs are covered. Jesus came to preach against the practices of the Pharisees, who just cared about how they looked in the eyes of other worshippers. It seems the Pharisees are back.

Poland let the hold the Church has on you disappear, this way you will be able to compete in the modern world

Totally universal problem. You'll run into it everywhere when you go in a church in a small town or village. In metropoles unlikely to happen. People less visit churches and anonimity is helping. :)

It doesn't stop at the Church either. The same can be seen at workplaces where there is sometimes an outright ban. I'm pretty sure Jesus would have shown some leg too. Let's face it, he wasn't gonna be sporting the latest Levi jeans ;) It's quite common in countries like Israel to walk around with shorts and sandals. Why should we fall prey to the stiff-upper-lip brigade?

They need to change the tune, and fast!

Christ died to stop this attitude, but it seems to me that the Church (especially Catholic) has forgotten this. Its another case of Catholics throwing the Bible out of the window

Jesus didn't wear trousers....why should we?

And to whom are we trying to show respect to? Jesus, our lord, or the babka b1tches (I bet they entered the church with those ridiculous babka hats on made from sheep's pubic hair)

Because they are sexy, man. Do you want to see naked dudes in the church?

you two obviously should just stay at home...

What if I was wearing trousers and hated God??? Would that be showing respect to the Church??? HAlf of the people in there dont want to be there, if they could be honest with themselves for just a moment.

Yap.
That so called 'dress code' for official buildings/companies etc. AND church is just to let you make feel their authority(over what??) and your inferiority(because of what). That's to me full bs. If that 'code' is for sth on equal level, ok., otherwise scrap it.

During one of my business trips to Israel i met the 2nd richest man in food production in one of his facilities...it was summer...they guy himself opened and received us in sandals, short and t-shirt with spots of tomato juice... ;) We were of course dressed like Communion student. ;)

It seems the Pharisees are back.

Tell us honestly - do you belch loudly and long at the table, next to other diners who are sitting at it? Do you pick up your nose or ears and eat what you find in them?

Pgtx, being honest, how Christian do you believe those mohair beret folk are? Love thy neighbour? Be jealous of your neighbour is more to the point. I see so many un-Christian acts here, it isn't even funny. Tell me, who is directly harmed from shorts? Are they worse than pedophiles whom are found in abundance in the RCC?

Sascha, very true. It is another form of control and of the holier-than-thou attitude that is all pervasive. Sticklers should not be permitted their wicked ways.

Sometimes yes, tasty too

Do people go to the theatres dressed in shorts? Just a peaceful question :)

So it means you are a boor. In Polish - peasant or beetroot. :):):)

What have you started this thread for? To boast of your beetrootness (buractwo) ? :):)

are you walking naked on a street?
it's called a dress code... and it's used everywhere...
i'm surprised that many people would wear everywhere just about anything... or nothing maybe...

The Church is about forgetting for a moment your body and trying to find your soul. When I see a chick in front of me with all the beauty that God gave her I forget naturally my soul and I am all body again. I need to concentrate.

Wearing shorts is hardly naked. I am more offended by the old women in church who judge otheres rather than listen to what the Priest has to say. If you picked up a BIBle once in your life, you would realise what I am saying to you.

No, I'm typing on a forum :) A dress code which allows slack women in? Where is the enforcement of that code? What use is a code without enforcement? So why allow nudity on beaches? They are public places like the Church is.

if you don't care about a dress code, just go for it and do it naked.... and why not?

it's called a dress code... and it's used everywhere...

...and it's most of the time stupid. Read my comment #12.

i'm surprised that many people would wear everywhere just about anything... or nothing maybe...

That's probably not true and if they are not dressed as it is 'supposed to be' it has sometimes to do with that they maybe cannot afford sth nicer, better...

Tell me, who is directly harmed from shorts?

Nobody directly, but if they reveal ugly legs....the eyes maybe...just jokin'. ;)

I was dragged along to Church this Easter

It seems you had prepared a sort of provocation with those shorts of yours, to silently protest against being dragged to church against your will.

Couldn`t you behave like a man and just say: no, I won`t go because it is against my creed ?

So why allow nudity on beaches?

I spent this long weekend on the beach in Rowy with my wife and kids and we did not wear a stitch the whole time, because we were given a choice. Noone judges us (everyone else was in the same situ) and I felt more comfortable there than I ever have in Church here in Poland.

ugly legs

it's not about pretty-ugly or cheap-expensive, but about what's appropriate and what's not...

if you don't care about a dress code, just go for it and do it naked.... and why not?

beacause the laws of the II republic of Poland dictate that I cant walk in Public places naked. THe church has no such rules, well CHrist certainly didnt leave his disciplres with any - well maybe one "go now make fishers of men"> he ceretainly didnt say "My Peter, my rock, go now and make sure everyone adheres to a dress code when they come forth into my house".

you have a very strong point here. If there's a dress code to follow, it should be valid for both, men and women. Besides, I believe that what matters (or should matter) is whether one believes in God or not and not what one is wearing.

if the male should be covered for modesty and respect, then so should the female.

men in trousers and women with knee length skirts.

i see more wrongs when young women attend church than i do with men.

it's not about pretty-ugly or cheap-expensive

That was just an example.

what's appropriate and what's not

Who is deciding that? Society? Customs? Conformism?

This stupid 'code' is probably standable as long as it's not caricaturating itself.

i see more wrongs when young women

Who is deciding that? Wrong? Right? Happen to see one of the "Jesus" movies over the easter holidays? What were his followers waering?

The focus is completely wrong. It's not about what you wear when you go to church than THAT you go to church for whatever reasons. You adress the faith NOT the institution and its forms.
