'Czym' is instrumental in Polish, i.e. 'with whom/what'/'by whom/with' e.g.

"Dzień dobry, Panu! Czym mogę służyć dzisiaj?" = Good morning, sir! How may I help you today? (....lit. "With what may I serve?")

'Interesującę się książkami nauki językowej. - No, niech Pan(i) uprzejmie mi powiedzi, czym Pan(i) interesujące się.

Czym is the instrumental of co (what) and describes by what you do something as you say in transport pociągiem-by train or samochodem-by car rowerem-by bike samolotem-by plane or even something by hand piórem-with a pen (długopisem), ołówkiem-with a pencil młotkiem-with a hammer.

Can you translate this last part Marek?

It's a version for question when u ask woman. If u want to ask male, then use 'pan' instead of 'pani'. hmmm kinda complicated

Czym to robisz? (when asking somebody what they use to make something)
Z czym to jesz/podajesz/serwujesz? (what are you eating/serving it with?)

Some good explanations above, and indeed "czym" is an Instrumental case of "coś".
So just add a few more examples:

- with what, by what means - czym jedziesz do Poznania?
- used in expressions about the nature of objects: Czym ty jestes? - a question suggesting a derogatory answer. For instance, when criticising someone's immoral behavior you may say: Czym ty jesteś? Zlodziejem? (Who are you? A thief!). However, "kim" would be correct here too, and without giving up too much of the derogatory intent.

- Czym wiecej wiem, tym mniej rozumiem (The more I know, the less I understand)

- przy czym - while at the same time. For instance: On jest zdolny przy czym bardzo skromny. (He's smart/gifted while at the same time very modest).

- Czym sie martwisz? What are you worried about? (as opposed to what worries you, which would be co cię martwi?)

Nad czym się tak zastanawiasz? - What are you thinking about (so hard).

Oh. I'd forget:

Sometimes you may hear what will sound to you as: "czym się". This is not uncommon, and it's kinda slang/collogialism of "trzymaj się", i.e hold on, keep on going, bye, later and such. Notice trzym (grammatically incorrect) is somwhat close in pronounciation to czym.

yes, got a little boobo here. The second one would be a correct definition. By mentioning "co" I meant that you can use "czym" instead of "co". The situation to decide when to use it depends in most cases on whether the verb is reflexive in Polish or not. The overlap in Polish vs. English in this respect is not 100%.

For instance:

Czym się martwisz/What are you worried about (relfexive in Polish, therefore "czym" is correct, but not reflexive in Enlish)

This is pretty much all I can say about that. The rest is a question of remembering which verb is, or isn't, reflexive in the Polish language and then using "czym" in a given context.

EDIT:

The example above contains the verb "matwić się". But there is also a nonreflexive form as in "martwisz mnie" (you're worrying me/I'm worried about you).

The idea here is a good one though because it again used the sense of czym meaning 'by what' ja interesuję się książkami-I like books the instrumental książką i.e. the book is 'by means' i.e. czym I am interested in something. It does answer the question. I used the work młotek i.e. młotkiem in an instrumental way of doing something in a similar way.

Clearly, i miswrote "Interesuję się..." .Can't imagine what I must ahve been thinking. I may not be native, but such a basic booboo I would not make, orthographic or otherwise.
