Dingbat: Dzień dobry from Nottingham

As it appears customary, my introduction:

Although I'm English, my wife's family are from Poland, coming to the UK after the war - via Siberia/Persia/Palestine - the usual routes for Sybiraks! Her father went on to Italy, fighting at Monte Cassino, while her mother sunned herself in Rhodesia.

Although my wife is bilingual, I have only reached the stage of learning very basic Polish (although I understand a lot more than I can speak!) but have long since developed a taste for Polish food and beer.

Main interest is family history, but with the border changes, this has been difficult as the records are now in Ukraine.

Useful to know when you're being talked about!

Although when I was standing outside my office the other day, a recently-arrived Pole asked me in broken English how to get to a particular address and was amazed when I replied in Polish.

Thanks for the offer, but we have already made a start on looking at the Księgi Metrykalne (Parish records) for the parish where my wife's family came from.

My wife's aunt visited Ukraine a few years ago. The farm they owned until the war is now owned by a Ukrainian family, and the Parish Church no longer exists. The parish records are now in Rzeszów but have been filmed by the Mormons - which is why we can go through them.

We are making progress slowly, but have managed to get back to the early 1800s so far - quite a bit more recent than my (English) family which I have been able to trace back to 1600.
