It will take place tomorrow, March 29th... Could that happen in PL also??

Twenty-six major cities around the world are expected to turn off the lights on major landmarks, plunging millions of people into darkness to raise awareness about global warming, organisers said.

What a cool idea... I've not heard about it here (in London).

One thing that makes me mad is the number of offices in the city (financial district -near my neighbourhood) that have their lights on all through the night and all over the weekend, when there is clearly nobody there.

Yet us little people are told not to leave our tv on standby <shrug>

the local government finally decided to shut off all the office light at night but that's because they were wasting millions on light bill and there is a huge shortage of tax moneys. i don't care how they arrived at this decision but i am v. glad they finally did.

Turn all the lights on public buildings off at 10 a.m.? I'm sure they can swing it.

Great idea, just wonder if it would have more of an impact if the turned the lights off at 9pm rather than 9am. Not that I am a synic or anything.

I was also wondering what the energy usage will be to prepare for the silly thing. Kids here have been working like crazy to prepare all kinds of decorations using paper, plastic and other materials for the production of which energy is used too. Of course, many stayed after hours at school so they had to burn extra electricity to see what they were doing. Lotsa little ones will further celebrate the Earth Day attending all various events and by taking a trip with their parents in their SUVs, some in smaller vehicles.

The cost of savings can add up really fast.

the silliest idea ever. More money was spent on advertising the event than saved, so.

When people turn their car engines on five minutes before driving anywhere 'to get it warmed up'. It will heat up quicker if the engine is doing more than just idling. Then the same people choose their car, in part, because of how many miles it does to the gallon, when they frequently run their cars doing ZERO miles to the gallon. Get a bike and turn the lights out when you don't need them.

Its not that easy to ride a bike on snow and ice. Also, in the winter you often need to warm up your car 5 minutes before hand to one thaw the windscreen and two not freeze your ass off once you start driving.

I don't think it is, M.....the more people hear about the event, the more likely they will think twice about leaving lights on....even if the cost might initially be great, in the long run, it could pay off ten fold.

Just the fact that so many countries are willing to do this, says something about the fact that we all know that we're killing the planet and using up all her resources.....I never heard of this until today, but it made me think of some very simple things that I can do to contribute more, without any real effort on my part.

I think it serves the purpose (as posted) to raise awareness...to get people's attention.

I was thinking about all the photos I have seen of aerial views of various countries at night.....all those little dots of light clustered in cities like masses of stars.

I wonder if there is a comparison photo somewhere taken of the Earth at night.... say circa 1900 and one circa 2000?

Do we really need to light the whole planet every night? I mean...doesn't that seem a little 'odd'?

And maybe I'm already aware. It's this particular idea that I think is ridiculous.

I quite doubt that, SG, unless an alien spaceship took the picture and sent it to us somehow, since we were not able to travel to space in 1900....lol;)

As am I, Wroclaw, and I have done things to limit wasting resources, but this day reminded me there are still more things I can do....nothing wrong with that.

I think its time to communicate other ideas to people about what helps....
turning off lights is fairly well known.

For example some folks may not know that leaving appliances plugged in while not used, still pull energy (toasters, cell phone chargers, etc.). Apparently its also safer to unplug unused appliances as well as saving energy.

I would like to see more education/awareness on issues like that. :)

18 million tons of CO2 sounds like a lot......

Woah, bugger me,its the exact opposite!!!!!Its safer to leave applainces such as TVs etc plugged in,not the other way round.Or so my local fire saftey officer told me....good god,net forums can be dangerous places for "advice" !

Since the unit is "live" there is a greater possibly for a short, then overheat, and combustion.

What was your fire safety officer smoking at the time? hehe

Dont be daft,Im no electrical expert but,if the cable is connected to the tv then the plug is earthed. Like I say though, these forums are NOT the place for safety advice.

Me too, I thought it was something wrong with my monitor. The Admins everywhere got some kind of color bug...

As to the one hour lights out - just another media hype to keep the little people busy. I don't agree with unplugging household appliances after every use. I do it however if I'm on vacation for 2 - 3 weeks. It's true that they use energy even when they are turned off, but it is minimal and not worthed the hassle.
Light energy is cheap, people don't care if the lights are left on in the bathroom for hours...
The solution: hitting in the packet always works best.

I see the biggest waste of energy and paper in office buildings. There is no need for all the lights to be on at night (some of the lights could be off during the day too, the sun is still bright enough). Not to mention the piles of paper resulting from unnecessary printing, it is outrages!
It would be better and safer to spend the money on street lights at night.
