hi all,

few useful links for Polish publications:
polishexpress.co.uk
goniec.co.uk
cooltura.co.uk

These are the best known in the UK. Apart from that there are monthly magazines for English speaking readers:
Discover Poland - discoverpl.com
Visit Poland and 4YOUK - don't remember the links, sorry!! :)

Hope it will be useful. :)

So what are your faves? My understanding is that there are two main publishers in London: Cooltura and Fortis (Laif, Polish Express, Panorama) - do UK Poles have a preference?

they do, as well as any other person... hard to say which one is the best, i guess it depends which is available in the store to pick up :)

i wouldn't exclude Goniec from that list - they're doing quite good as well...

personally i think that new idea about Polish publication for English readers is all right... i've seen all three of them (actually there are 4 of what i've heard but don't no the title) and it seems that they got the 'future'...

Publications for English readers - quite a brave move, but maybe they need to rethink the content. I've seen the Irish version of Visit Poland online, which was great in terms of encouraging travel to Poland - but how about encouraging more interaction in Ireland e.g. details of gigs, festivals, food, recipes etc.

I picked up a copy of 4YouK here in London - I think that this was the first edition, and there seemed to be quite a mix of subjects, though not specifically about Poland.

Interesting - not seen this one before (I am central London and like to keen an eye on the media)... where is it distributed?

I appreciate what they are try to do with it - encourage tourism to Poland without attracting the stag party lads :D but I wonder if it would be better in a quarterly rather than monthly format.

Are you involved in this one, or do you have any connections to it?

sort of... i know who is doing that (friend of mine is working there)...

i don't like the idea of 2-3 pages articles in it... i guess it would be better with short info of what is there (city, region) worth to see, where to eat and things like that...

I think you can find it where Polish Express is - the same publisher, some WH Smiths but don't know where exactly...

Who is the target readership? I can see that it would appeal to somebody like me who visits Poland on business a couple of times a year and has a couple of friends there - though I guess it is a bit of a niche.

Would it persuade Joe Public to think about a couple of weeks on Sopot instead of the annual fortnight on the med? - I doubt it. It might suffer the same identity crisis as the Positively Poland in London later this month.

Nevertheless, it is great to see an attempt at promoting Poland in the UK / encouraging British-Polish relations.

Just had a quick read through the Discover Poland link given by Mizag. An interesting read, quite long articles though but I suppose if it's a monthly then that is probably the way to go.

I saw it was April 2008, is there a May issue yet? I couldn't find one.

Just comparing it with 4YouK... looks like the second issue is about Tibet rather than Poland. Hmmm.....

Well... I guess nothing will be better than Ibiza's fish&chips bars :) Ain't that booooring? Leaving England to go to England only Spanish (sure, no rain and sun all the time...) meeting the same people all the time? Drinking and eating the same staff as always? Hmmm... not really my kinda thing...

I believe that it will encourage those with adventurous soul willing to see bit more than Buckingham Palace. And there is a lot to see (not only Poland). And just maybe it will change some people view about Poland...

Gosh, i've wrote a poem :) First in my life :)

Sorry folks... :)

Totally agree with you there - not my bag either.

Perhaps I didn't make my point clear enough.... here's a few examples of what I mean:

I've had loads of great holidays in Canada (among other places). If there was a magazine all about Canada in my local WHSmiths, I'm not convinced that I would buy it.

I'd like to visit Thailand one day. It's not my "dream destination", but somewhere that I'd like to visit at some point in my life. If there was a magazine all about Thailand in my local WHSmiths, I'm not convinced that I would buy it.

At the same time, I'm not particularly bothered about visiting the Caribbean (but if course if you offered me a free trip, then of course I'd take it LOL!). If there was a magazine all about the Caribbean in my local WHSmiths, I'm not convinced that I would buy it.

I still think that there is place in the market re. UK/Polish relations for a magazine that focuses on Polonia in the UK - encouraging British people to think about Polish restaurants in London, try out Polish recipes with ingredients bought in Polish delis in the UK, check out Polish music gigs and festivals etc.

Got you now :) true - if you want to go to some destination you will find needed info easily - there is no need for buying magazines.

Yet it have some kind of informative purpose, I think. I was actually happy to read it cause it is showing you where we are from, that white bears aren't running on our streets etc. It won't probably encourage you to drop everything and go to Poland cause it is sooo wonderful :) But it will stay in your mind like: I've read once abut some place in Poland - maybe I'll go there one day? That will be enough...

and that's all about :)

And yes, I agree that there should be more info about Polish events in England.

Yet I've got one info: Thursday, 15 of May - Potters Fields Park (City Hall bank), 10am - 8pm - Polish flag signing (Euro 2008) sponsored by Tyskie beer :) should be fun!!!

Cool - I did try to find a copy of Discover Poland at the weekend, but didn't manage to see it anywhere.

Have you got any further info on that? I'd be up for that (especially if the weather is like it is today). Do we need tickets etc?

I actually saw a copy of 4YouK -- really nice layout and graphics and some information on all things Polish but really not much offered in terms of actual articles with the exception of one interesting article about medical tourism by someone from a company called statmedica

No way!!? They sorted out my dental work last time I was in Warsaw. I didn't realise. Was the article written by Alison at StatMedica?

Excellent - yes, I spoke to Alison when I was trying to sort out my veneers. She was really helpful. I guess I should call her - I read the article in 4Youk, but never twigged that it was her who wrote it.
