English people attitude towards Poles?

Isthatu....You've managed to say in two posts what i've been thinking for the last six months!!....I notice over the last week Britain has won 'YET' another two Noble Prizes....One for Science and one for Literature....and they still have this strange notion that their all better than us!!

A Frenchman and German are sharing a Nobel Peace Prize, aren't they? Or am I getting my prizes mixed up here???

Your right the Germans and the French did also win a Noble Prize along with the Brits....but the Poles didn't....which was my point!!

Yet we are one of the very few countries who have had multiple people to win a Nobel Prize.

Just to clarify my points. Fair play to people who move to this country to work,just have a little understanding for the local situation and lose the attitude or you will become a set of selffullfilling prophecies,isolated and disliked by the local population.
The anger should be aimed at agencies and employers not on fellow workers( oops,a bit "red" but ,ah well)

Are you resident in the UK? Do you have any first hand experiance of being resident in the UK in the last few months,or for that matter of being a citizen of the UK born and raised here?
If as I suspect you do not fill any of those I fail to see what constructive input you can have in this thread. A moderators duty is to ensure some form of fair play on a free forum,not to come on threads they have no connection to and insult people.,or am I mistalen there?

What is wrong with being an agricultural worker,is that something you would have a problem with people doing to earn an honest living? I certainly wouldnt have a problem doing that job if so requeried or inclined, a job is a job,in fact I am sure many strawberry pickers are students who will go on to develop succesful careers in that or more likely other lines of work.

I was raised with tough love and had to fight tooth and nail for what I have today. I was just laid off recently as well so I understand, but since I have experience in the world I was able to get something right away. You're absolutely correct in saying that I don't know anything about the UK, but I know work has to be out there somewhere.....even if it is picking strawberries. In your opinion I'm wrong in telling him to stop crying and try harder.

Agree with you, my work collegues have actually sent me to Coventry (wont talk to me or recognise that I am there) because I talk and socialise both inside and outside of work with our Polish workers. They are totaly stupid, ignorant and uncultured.

I have never been treat with more respect from my now new Polish friends.They also dislike that my lover is also Polish.

But you know that you are a far better person for being open-minded.
Petty, bigoted people miss out on so many of the pleasures in life through their ignorance and pessimism.
I'm just glad the same thing didn't happen where I work.

Funnily enough my brother work in a factory in Coventry where most of the staff are Polish and he says people get on fine. How ironic.

I worked with 3 Polish girls this time last year and they were the the loveliest people I've ever worked with.

As far as the attitude of Brits towards Poles is concerned, there is a lot of resentment towards the people that have come over here from Eastern Europe in general and not just Poland, though as the majority are from Poland all Eastern Europeans tend to get referred to as Polish.

But it's not that British people don't like Polish people, it's the amount that have come here that they don't like.

Oh yeah. That's it.

I work for an agency. I'm English. I've many Polish friends, workmates and an ex-girlfriend who is Polish. I'm slowly learning to speak Polish.

As far as the work situation goes, yes, having so many Polish arrive so quickly, has made life as an agency worker, extremely tough. If there are, for ease of example, 100 jobs to be given out in one week, from the agency. Then, before the "invasion" ( I hate that term!) the agency would have struggled to fill even half of those positions... leaving me with the option of taking the highest paying work that week.

On top of that, if a company were absolutely desperate for extra staff, then they'd pay higher, often above those of its regular staff... because the market economy dictates that is how they need to behave. When there was no need for those staff, then they'd lay you off. No problem, I'd go and pick the next highest paying... or best conditioned job, with the hours that suited me.

Now. If there are 100 jobs available in one week, then there are ( I am guessing here) about 200 people to choose from. We're all on pretty much minimum wage, because, it's a market economy, and the employers and agency know that they can get anyone they want... because we all know there're 100 people behind us who'll take the work if we say we wont work for minimum wage.

Most weeks now, I am lucky if I get 3 shifts. I'm sitting here today, in a seasonal work town, with many many unemployed, because I have no work. Tomorrow I do. Yesterday I worked. Next week? I don't know. Maybe nothing, maybe 5 shifts. And yes, life is bloody difficult. But I don't blame the Polish for it. Many English have done exactly the same as the Poles, when unemployment was high in the UK in the past, we went abroad and worked in Spain and Germany and elsewhere.

I like where I live, I have roots here, I have a mortgage. I can't just pick up and leave. I also wont sign-on. Unless I was absolutely desperate. It hasn't come to that yet. I can normally get enough money each week to pay the bills. Just.

As I said, I don't blame the Poles. Life is Brutal, as many of them say. Things will even out eventually, and hopefully soon. I was laid off from a decent job I'd held (as an agency fella) recently. I got a bit pissed drowning my sorrows, as I'd had little work that week, and went round to talk to a mate about how shite the situation for work is in Scarborough. He said the problem was too many Polish in town... i disagreed, there's not enough decent work, but... and here's the thing... my mate is Polish! Kind of weird eh????


Anyhows, just a ramble, to kind of explain it from one Englishman's perspective. Hope that enlightens some people.

I think it's quite natural for some English people to feel anxious my friend. Since the 1950's this country has seen a large influx of foreigners land on it's shores. Since then some people see that the country has been in a decline and like to put the blame elsewhere and the first and most obvious external target are foreign people. Somepeople in my country are small minded biggoted fools in my opinion. They for instance in the 50's and 60's blamed the Asian influx of people but in the 70's the went to curry houses for food and now curry is my countries number one dish. Thinks take time my friend but don't let the small minority of people get to you or dishearten you on what this country has to offer. An example of this is.... Last week I was on a bus which drove past new buildings getting erected . An old man on the bus said to his wife those buildings are for Asylum Seekers. I cringed for this man because I knew that those new buildings are for students. This is just one example of misinforamtion being spread by a narrow mind. Like I said to you before do not be preturbed by people like this and enjoy my country and what she has to offer.

Oh I nearly forgot my friend. During The Battle of Briatin during World War 2 when Britain was a whisker away from crumbling a lot of the brave pilots who were fighting in English skies were Polish. If anybody gives you grief you can always remind them of that fact.
