EU helps China to cripple Dalai Lama's charity

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2008/03/16/ do1602.xml

Fuc*en disgusting..... Im getting sick of the weakness of the EU..... Say what you want about US policy but we would never let China pressure us into something like this...

Somehow I doubt that!

We know for a fact that for example Mrs. Merkel supports Tibet and even invited the Dalai Lama to visit her in the Chancellory....an honor the chinese government tried to stop with threats and bribery. The were very, very angry and put alot of pressure onto her....German-chinese relationship cooled down considerably (many Germans wish for a boycott of the games too).

"Dalai Lama Visit Jeopardizes German Business Interests"

Now consider that Mrs. Merkel is not unimportant in the EU and surely not a lone nutter concerning China and Tibet and the opinion that the EU supports China regardless what they do won't hold any water!

And not to forget...wasn't it GB's Brown who visited China shortly before to make nice with these people? The Telegraph has surely no leg to stand on criticizing!

URL

"Gordon Brown says the relationship between Britain and China is "better than ever". He made the remarks in a written interview with Chinese reporters in London ahead of his visit to China."

Yesterday President Bush took China from the list of the ten worst human rights offenders....why did he do that? It can't be because they became democratic peaceniks over night, right? Please explain!

URL

"WASHINGTON, March 11 (UPI) -- China, despite its still-dismal human rights record, has been removed from the U.S. worst offender list, the State Department said."

Okay...from another source:

"...Appropriate Technology for Tibetans (ApTibet) is a UK charity that helps
Tibetan refugees, mainly in northern India, Nepal and in China. The
charity's principal trustee is the Dalai Lama. In 2000/2001 ApTibet won
75% EC funding for four projects, two of which had been completed as of
2005, the other two being well on the way to completion....

In 2005 the EC suddenly cancelled all four contracts, and then demanded
repayment of all grant moneys paid - some 2M euros. The reason given was
that ApTibet had subcontracted part of the work to another charity,
Appropriate Technology Asia
."

1.) It's an UK project

2.) The Telegraph complains 3 years later - about the EU!

3.) Mishandling of the money seemed to be the reason

Interesting, isn't it...

If you read the story, the EC is now asking for that money to be repayed....

Of course they are...if they got money under explicit terms and they do something else with it...it's normal procedure, don't you think?

The Telegraph is a really "link" paper...you should really take anything they write with a huge mountain of salt!

Yes, if they spent it on something else...... But they didn't..... It was because of the agreement that was signed with China....

I know what Merkel has said, but sadly the EU still can't come to grips with a common foreign policy or even one foreign minister...so it's an issue for every member for himself.

ty, I'll take a look but I don't deny that Germany cares..... I was saying the EU is weak, especially as you kindly point out they are unable to agree on such a simple issue..

Good thing is, that we can always boycott the Olympics so China feels it must show restraint....

Nato countries need to stop being stupid and doing everything in their power to anchor Ukraine and Georgia into the west..... It would send a wrong signal to these countries and can have serious consequences for Nato...

I don't think people realise the preparation that goes into an event like the Olympics. China has been putting in a lot of elbow-grease to put things in place. Proving points through boycotting shouldn't be done in this way. It has all the hallmarks of war. I see a number of international issues that have been horribly mismanaged, that could lead to an escalation in international conflicts. As Stephen Hawkings said, "It doesn't have to be like this, all we need to do is keep talking". This is from Keep Talking on the Division Bell album, Pink Floyd

The British nuclear warheads are scattered in the ocean. There are no nuclear weapons on land. They're launched from a submarine

Yes, and with a disproportionate human cost. Why should this be tolorated purely because it is being done in the name of the Olympics? Surely boycotting the events is the most appropriate way of protest.

Bases don't have to be on land ASG. Warplanes don't always fly out of airports, they also take off from sea-based locations (hangars?). U must have seen those videos. Russia has highly developed submarine tech, they could easily target and take out our facilities, they have the intel
