Why don't you go sit on her knee and talk to her about football then. Leave the grown-ups to their rational debate.

Now run along.

You are talking about english, portugese or spanish as if they were world class teams! Something to admire...to go after but hell...when was the last they won ANYTHING???

The only ones on par with the Italians are the Germans...yeah I know you hate it (*big grin) but that's the way...and you ignoring that in your discussions is a sure sign how wrong and clueless about real skill you all are...and therefore you will make all the old errors again
and get the same results...so there! :)

PS: You need alot more than just "consistency" to get to show the record over the decades the Germans have!
You should think about THAT!

URL

There's a rather weird contradiction between German soccer and its English counterpart. Despite the two countries being arch-rivals in the game for over a century, you cannot hold back from noticing the close resemblance between the two.

The soccer of Germany, as is the case with English one, is based on physical athleticism, pragmatism and well rounded tactics.

German soccer fans respect a good hard tackle almost as cheerfully as the English ones and it's no wonder that most of the national Germany soccer team’s heroes are either defenders, defensive midfielders or goalkeepers.

But leaving all theories aside, soccer in Germany has a lot of stuff that makes it unique, on both club and national team levels.
....
The German national soccer team's World Cup record is impressive: in 16 participations to a World Cup, they managed to win it 3 times, place second 4 more times and third 3 times. That's 10 different medals in 16 participations. I don't know about you, but to me that's pretty impressive. And as if that didn't prove the quality of the German national team throughout time, take a look at their European Championship record: 9 participations out of 12, 3 Cup wins and 2 runner-up places....

*whispers to Bratwurst*

1996 was 12 years ago mate. How many Germans from that team are still playing today? So your point exactly?

The last time Argentina won anything was the Copa America in 1993, and before that, the World Cup in 1986. None of their current team played in those tournaments funnily enough. They are still a World Class team.

Only one team can win a tournament. By your reckoning, Greece are world beaters? ;)

England are (or should be) a par Q/F team based on the players they have available. Germany do not (now) possess the quality that either England, Portugal or Spain have at their disposal but still consistently perform well in these Championships. This is indeed something to be commended.

And I do believe you missed the French...

or the Brazialians who are (and pretty much always have been) head and shoulders above everyone.

Erm...since I thought we were talking European football so I left Brazil out...they are in a class of their own!

About the french...their golden generation is done and *whispers back* it was only last year as we put your famed portugese into their place!

You don't want to start downtalk the german Mannschaft - not as an English, don't you??? :):):)

IronsE11:

That's what I meant!
Doesn't that make you think???
Either your famed players are not as well as you think they are or the german Mannschaft is not as bad as you make them out to be!

It get's funny really....english looking down to german players and always losing that badly in important tournaments!

PS: Maybe it's a different perception of WHAT a really good player actually is...a ball whirling, egoistical diva or a hard working, straightforward team player!

I don't look down on German football at all. Beckenbauer, Muller, Klinsmann are some of my favourite players of all time. You don't have that quality of player now but are well organised and consistently do well.

Who are the last winners of this tournament (European Championships)? Are they better than Germany? Do they have better individuals than Germany? If you can answer the following questions (which I presume you can) then your entire argument is flawed i'm sorry to say.

Bratwurst Boy:
it was only last year as we put your famed portugese into their place!

When was that? (excuse my ignorance). Did they meet in the 3rd/4th place playoff in the WC? If so, that was 2006, and a game which is rarely competitive for obvious reasons.

If I really wanted to have a dig at German football I would refer to our 5-1 humiliation of you, or point out the quite embarrassing record of your Champions League teams.

You don't get the record the german have only by being "well organized" or "consistend"...that's crap!

To fight through a whole tournament (means not getting kicked out after the preliminary rounds) you need tough, hard fighters who also know to handle a ball and who know where the goal is.

Sorry but I see it as a really wrong perception many english have when they think they have the better players!
Maybe that's is the source of so much ill feeling towards the german team as in: "They don't really deserve it! WE have the better player therefore WE should win!"

I tell you this...the moment the english team learns to appreciate german qualities they might make a step forward....

Your harking back to the 5-1 game get's more ridiculous the longer it goes back and the more humiliating defeats the english have to take since...

The Championsleague as well as other club-championships don't count. The teams are international and the german strenghts don't come to play here...A Bayern Munich is as german as Chelsea is english! Not!

IronsE11:

Yeah well...2 years...how the time flies...:)

My argument is just facts...that english make the error to regularly underestimate and dismiss german teams...everytime...they squeal about their own, the spanish, the portugese and what not...but during the time there are only four real successfull teams:

Brazil
Italy
Germany
France

No english! No spanish! No portugese! No dutch....Famous ball wizards or not..I just say you should think about that! That's all....:)

You are right...I just remembered the last finals...but being regularly successfull it needs more...so now it's down to:

Brazil
Italy
Germany

:)

PS: In reaching the finals of international tournaments the Germans are holding something of a record I believe...no other team get's regularly as far as the Mannschaft!
Only because of being "well organized"??? Suuuuuuure.....:)

Bratwurst

I really can't be bothered to argue...
If you don't understand my point you never will.

Argentina have better players than Germany. Germany beat them in the last World Cup. Why? Because the Argentianian coach took Riquelme off when they were dominating the game.

France have better players than Greece, Greece beat them at the last Euro Championships. Why? Greece were well organised, solid in defence and were generally quite lucky.

Best players don't always make for the best teams.

It's fairly simple to understand.

And a couple of further points:

Bratwurst Boy:
Your harking back to the 5-1 game get's more ridiculous the longer it goes back and the more humiliating defeats the english have to take since...

Nothing was quite as humiliating as that was it? Emile Heskey!!! You can say I 'hark' back to it, but please tell me, how many tournaments have Germany won since then? I'd say you are doing the 'harking'.

fwiw, if I was forced to put my last £5 on a team to win the Euros it would be Germany. Not because they have the best players of all the teams in the tournament, but because they are arguably the best team.

Please tell me you understand this concept.

....and you can add Argentina to your list

IronsE11:

That's all what counts!

Portugal also may have better player but Germany did beat them in the last World Cup,
that's all what counts!

When you don't get this message then it's your problem!

And harking back to a win which is now long back (and Germany did beat England in the mean time) IS ridiculous! Sorry! :):):)

We don't have to "hark"....Germany came in third in the last WC! That's a thing to be proud of nothing to hark about!
When came England last time third in a big tournament???

Take your "best players" and go watching when better teams play! :)

very true ..... one knows that no matter how poor the media say the Germany team may be, when it comes to tournament play, the Germans nearly always perform well - they play to their disciplined style of football.

They may not have the best players but if one or two get injured/suspended they usually can bring in players who know the style/method of playing and slot in perfectly

yeah i know look at all those little spanish fairies diving all over the place, is it a mans game or what?????

I wonder why the england players were making tackles like that???? maybe it has something to do with the biggoted racist scum in the crowd :) Night of shame for England i think the world reflects it was a night of shame for SPAIN with all the monkey chanting etc etc. SO take your video and stick it in the mouths of those who were chanting racist abuse as the black players of England.

THis just goes to shwo that spain is still way way behind in accepting multiculturalism. Get with the program you backwards Mexicans and stop this disgraceful behaviour!!!!!!

Being British and a Deutschland support, i think a lot of English people underestimate the German National side. All the players play for big clubs who are in either the champions league or Uefa cup. Quality players all over the park:
Goalkeeper: Lehman/Hilderbrand/Wiese, defenders like Metzelder/Mertesacher(sp)/Lahm, Midfielders- Ballack/Schwiensteiger/Frings/Borowski, Strikers of the class of Klose/Kuranyi/Podolski. I think the problem is most of these names are not heard of in the UK and so they are deemed to be inferior.
One thing the Germans are the best at in the World is heading a football. No one has come close to the likes of K H Riedle(sp).

I have to go and play a cup final now but it would be interesting if we could compare the current English and German national teams player for player.

Bratty, can you do the honours for the German team?

For example:

Gerrard > Ballack
Ferdinand > Metzelder

etc etc.

The only shame about the night was the fact the England players failed to break any of the Spaniards legs. I'm not very keen on blacks myself but they were England players. I don't mind the likes of Ashley Cole, Heskey and co. That night I was more interested in seeing the Spaniards get hurt than the football itself. Those Spaniards went down far too easily. Like little girls. England players just don't do that.

Your having a laugh!!! Sky sports news today, interview with Fabio capello saying he will clamp down on and instruct his players not to dive. As he was saying this various clips of: Rooney, Gerrard, Cole were being played. Each showing clearly no contact but the player hitting the turf like he had been shot by a sniper.

i've got to say that english players do dive, take Joe Cole and Steven Gerrard for example, Gerrard is such a bad diver i can't even believe he tries it. Joe Cole has obviously been learning from Drogba about how to go down when that fly taps you on the shoulder or the ankles :)

Ashley Cole has even started to join the diving party and staying on the floor for longer than he should. Yes england players don't roll about like the Italians or the Spanish but they do dive and cheat to try and gain an advantage, about that there is no doubt

English players very rarely dive. Capello knows that. We all know that. Sometimes England players are TOO honest. That's what was being said throughout the whole Euro 2008 Qualifiers too. Foreigners are renowned for their diving and for being drama queens

Torres (Spaniard)

Cristiano Ronaldo (Portuguese)

These foreigners do it on a regular basis. A bunch of fannies. You also only need to look at that "night of shame" video to see some great diving.

Sadly it is now part of the game. Joe Cole is one of England's worst. Having said that, it was definitely something that was pioneered on the continent. The possible exception is Francis Lee! He was ahead of his time winning numerous penalties with minimal contact in the 1970's.

FWIW, I don't believe Capello has said anything of the sort to his players. He's probably pandering to the English media.
