Anyone else suffering from mosquito bites in Poland?

I noticed a week ago that there were far more mosquitoes flying around than is usual for the time of year.

The government is about to spray the country with insecticide and it's all because of the flood and the stagnant pools of water that were formed.

When there was last a plague of mozzies, in Warsaw, many people were hospitalized.

The question is: Have you noticed these little pests and what is your answer to them ?

Absolutely ... !! I live off Grabiszynska in Wroclaw (with no pools or puddles or rivers anywhere) and before I go to sleep I have to do some serious hunting. If it goes on like this, we'll have to paint the walls after the summer is over so the smudges are covered ... :(.

In America people burn citronella candles to keep mosquitoes away and various mosquito repellensts in the form fo sprays or dojiggers you plug into electrical outlets. On a larger scale the hatching of mosquito larvae is prevented by spraying ponds and stagnant pools with an oily substance. This is just off the cuff stuff - I'm no expert on bug killing.

In Poland they are crazy this year, the outskirts of our town is still flooded, and the mosquitos have turned evil!. Where ever i go in the world, i get attacked, but at the moment some of my bites are flairing up to 1in wide! I look even more stupid than normal :)

I've got one of them plug-in things for my bedroom which seems to help at night... i would recomend!

I hope they do something soon :)

You can take an 1 antihistamine tablet (2nd generation) daily to reduce they symptoms of the bites.

Should be taken before you get the bites.

the water does not help for the mosquitos

The floods would have brought them out plus now the hot weather is there they will be mating like...erm mozzies :P

I'm actually quite allergic to mozzies (I stay in the wrong country eh :D ). Last year in Krk I got bitten twice on the arm and spent an eveing in hospital after it had swollen to three times its normal size....elephant man's arm i had :)

Not yet... it's probably now humid enough.. weather changed from really cold and wet to dry and hot suddenly and Silesian pollution adds a bit too...

At the time I didn't realise I was allergic, only the next day when I had a balloon arm :)

I don,t really have a problem with Mozzies , they don,t seem to have a taste for my English blood , and even when they do bite me it does not cause me too much discomfort....

I actually let em bite me if they want to , cos when they have that sucker in you they can,t fly away , so i can take great delight in squashing them....

Yus...eat more beans folks...keep the mozzies away..... if you eat enough of them you can keep everything away...!

Not beans, eat garlic. Garlic keeps them away.

Not only them, I'm afraid ... :-S

But I guess if you combine garlic AND beans, then you might have a recipe for success (or for a life in eternal solitude ... :-S)

in america there is a wonderful little innovation called "screens on windows". you can leave your windows open all day long, no bugs. the only way they can get in is through a door.

Bingo - I had problems for years getting bits and having quite bad reactions to them..Now I eat loads of garlic before I go away and when Im away and the buggers have never come near me since!

Back on the mozzi topic, we've got problems in the UK with them..again its related to stagnant pools of water..

Get yourselves an Avon lady, look in the catalogue and buy the green skin-so-soft dry oil spray (the lotion works too, but the dry oil spray is easier). Done, bugs can't stand the stuff and it's great for your skin.

Spray yourself with Off! Sit of the patio with a giant mozzie candle burning and open a tinny.

It seems quite a big allergy you developped. Try useing histamine blockers like SveniPolen suggested - but not cetirizine dichloride as it can have side effects, like you may not be able to drive or be sleepy. 10mg loratatadinum should work plus at least 1000mg calcium although your allergy seems harsh so a doctor should give you something special. I myself noticed that mosquitos do not bite that much when you drink alcohol, and not at all when smoking a... pipe.

I have been eating lots of beans for the five years i have been in Poland...and no problem with mozzies...errr yes i do live alone...!

Come to thimk of it, when movies show old American farmhouses in the 1920s, they already have screen doors. I wonder how widespread window screens and screen doors are in continental Western Europe these days? What about the UK and Eire?

Never seen any in the UK , or in Poland....but they might be a good idea....Hanging a long net curtain helps keep a lot of the little horrors out of the house...

I heard that mosquitos don't like drafts and that it helps having a fan blowing as they are too weak to fly up against the stream of air.

In the US, where the mosquitos are more evil than anywhere else and they just bite you right through your clothes, they have this repellant that works wonderfully once you sprayed it all over you. Only downside is, it smells like hell.

What also helps is getting a lemon-plant and put it on your bedside table or rubbing yourself in with lemon juice (a lot more healthier than any spray out of a can). Mosquitos don't like lemon and they will stay away. Also, you could try and get one of them "male-mosquito" thingies, that make the sound of a male mosquito. Since it's the female mosquitos that bite you and also, since female mosquitos cannot stand to have male mosquitos around, they will think there is a male mosquito present and they won't come near you. Funny, but it actually seems to work.

It's actually a myth that some ppl don't get bitten by mosquitos. Everyone gets bitten by them, it's only that a very small percentage of the ppl are NOT allergic for the saliva a mosquito leaves behind and which causes the itch and swelling. Those ppl won't notice a thing, but 99,99 per cent of the ppl will start scratching like hell.

In NL and the US I always get feasted upon by mosquitos, but here in Ireland I have only been bitten once by a mosquito. It seems that there are hardly any over here. I think that has to do with the wind that is permanently present over here.

Surprisingly, I haven't been bitten but my time is coming. One of my students had a cracker of a bite on her hand today. She passed it off as being from a mosquito ;) ;)

If you can stand it, long sleeves and jeans or trousers helps keep them from biting your arms and legs.
