I have some thoughts on relocating to Poland (I am Ukrainian citizen).

Which city would you advise? At the moment I am considering Poznań.

I am freelance translator, so normally I can work from any place with good internet connection and some banks around.

But I heard that in Warsaw rent of apartment is significantly higher? Also, I heard something like Warszawianie are not like other Polish people, so to say they are less friendly and more egoistic? ;)

Warsaw is ok, Krakow is even better :)

I am just messing, honestly a good place to live is all about what you want out of it.

So the question is, what do you want out fo the place you are thinking of moving to?

It's easy :)

1) nice people

2) low crime level

3) not very high apartment prices (I mean rent)

4) some universities in the city (maybe I will also continue education)

5) some IT companies in the city (optional)

My recommendation is Krakow or Poznan.
]1) nice people - of course! :)
2) low crime level - I guess pretty tollerable
3) not very high apartment prices (I mean rent) Poznan is cheaper than Krakow, both are cheaper than Warsaw.
4) some universities in the city (maybe I will also continue education) Best two universities in Poland...
5) some IT companies in the city (optional) - loads of them in Krakow (to mention just a few big players among many others: IBM, Capgemini, Intelenet, Google)

Yup. There is common opinion that they are scum collected from whole Polish countryside. Nobody likes them especially when they do bydło in Masuria.

Gdańsk is my favourite town so I recommend 3city ;)

That's what my two friends considering themselves 'true warsawians' tell me... They really live there for generations and are very nice.
They hate that Warsaw is so full of peasants who came from neighboring villages and from allover the country in the early 80's. Many uneducated and rude, knowing how to work the elbows in the crowd. Well, it's been a while. I'm sure their kids born in Warsaw since then are different. I myself had a good impression of the city on my last visit, but I did not take any tramway rides...

Go to Cracow ... if you're close to retiring.
Poznan is the best Polish city in the life's quality ranking.
If you enjoy a real struggle for career and are looking for serious opportunities your choice is Warsaw.
I can only laugh about our friendly rednecks and their inferiority complexes ...

Come to Lodz ;-) ...

But hey ... as a freelance translator you need to relocate to areas where they would need one. Wroclaw, Warsaw, Lodz ... Krakow! ... Try these places.

If you want to move only for the sake of earning ... then maybe you might prefer France, I heard they need translators there more and more. Although you will find stiff competition.

Right, Eurola. The bad rap Varsovians get is mainly from those "Varsovians" with hay still sticking out from their shoes. The influx into the city has been detrimental to culture in general for decades, although the communists were very fond of rude and primitive people and very against intelligensia. Social advancement takes a few generations, so a hick from Mazury living in Warsaw passes for a Varsovian till he opens his mouth or has to let a lady by.

Peter Olsztyn, ever wonder why Mazurians can't come to realize that if you charge 2 zl. for every pee in the summer at the lake district, you will have a stinky, filthy region after a while. I like Olsztyn, don't get me wrong.

Although from Śródmieście and Mokotów, my favorite place in Poland is Toruń. Lovely Old Town, noticeably more mellow people than in Warsaw, much cheaper, I could go on.

I love Krakow.
I lived near Krakow and this was my favorite City.
I lived in Warszawa 4 years but not so favorite.
If I will go back someday to my Country I will move to Krakow.
Make sure you have a ton of zlotowek ( GOLD ) to live there.
Sell your house, your parents house, all your possessions and than you
should look OK there.
Wherever you go in Poland you will pay a lot, but Krakow is AWESOME !

If you considering car trips to your homeland then Cracow would be best because in about two-three years you will have highway straight to the border (and I've heard that because of Euro2012 Ukrainians started to do something about roads from border to Lviv).

On the other hand, I've heard that there is some Ukrainian minority in Gdansk (because of our not easy history...). So if you would like to sing some Ukrainians songs with your compatriots then Gdansk would be good choice...

I have a good comparisson of the two, and both are very good. Cracow - retiring? This place has more oportunities for development than Poznań.
