My private car has a registration starting with WY and ending with Y. I recently heard that all foreigners registering their car here get that kind of plate numbers. The other odd thing is of course is - I realised this recently - that I had to register it in the city office on Pl. Starynkiewicz, whereas I live in Bielany.
And that of course the police knows perfectly you are a driving bankomat :)

I've registered cars at three addresses in Warsaw (Srodmiescie, Bemowo and Wola) and had to go to Pl. Starynkiewicz every time. The most recent time, the woman in Wola Ratusz told me it was because I had Zameldowanie Czasowego* limited to 5 years, and that was why. Once I have permanent Zameldowanie I can have Wola plates, not these WY... ones.

I don't get stopped by the police often, but when I do they're usually very friendly and will reduce the fine if you teach them a few words in English.

*I'm sure I've made a grammar mistake here, please correct me

Thanks. I think I will go to apply for normal Bielany plates as well in this case.

I owned cars with the WY-Y plates for years and was never stopped and considered a bankomat . The only time you are going to get stuffed is if you are in a road accident guilty or not. The Poles know the rules, so prepare yourself in advance.

Yes. Of course this is what is referred to as technically illegal under EU law but since when did that ever bother Poland.

Personally I look forward to the day I get really bored with Polish red tape: I will then proceed to register a right-hand drive car and get it on non-foreigner plates and laugh manically when I am stopped from doing so.

As for driving a bankomat: just bribe the police in the usual Polish way.
