Do I have to do something to start receiving mail in Poland? (moved from the US)

I am hoping someone can help me with this. I moved to Poznań from the US recently for work. I found a nice apartment and have moved in. But I haven't gotten a single piece of mail since I moved in. Not even junk mail. My bank mailed me a new Debit card 3 weeks ago and it has not shown up yet. And then tonight I found out that a package I ordered from Amazon.de was returned for a refund. But I never received it. I never had a notice to come pick it up at the post office or anything else that might have indicated a delivery attempt.

Is there something I need to do in Poland in order to start getting mail? Thanks

I know where my mailbox is and I have the key. The mailbox is designed in such a way that even the postman can't open it. He can just push letters through the slot. And yes, I have tested the key and it works just fine. And further, because someone will no doubt ask, the number on the mailbox is the same as my apartment number, so there should be no risk of confusion.

Vaasa: I know where my mailbox is and I have the key. we weren't laughing at your expense. i'd go to the local post office and chat to them. or maybe post myself a registered letter and see what happens to it.

Vaasa: I know where my mailbox is and I have the key. Well something is a miss, just thought I'd go for the obvious and work my way out from there. Your best bet is probably to nip down the post office and ask them what's happening to your mail. There is nothing special you have to do to receive post.

I never had a notice to come pick it up at the post office or anything else that might have indicated a delivery attempt. The postman doesn't always leave a slip, you need to find ourt where your local post office is and go with your id every couple of week and just ask if they have anything for you.

Unfortunately, I don't speak much Polish yet. So I'll have to see if I can convince one my co-workers to come with me tomorrow to a post office. Also unfortunately, there don't seem to be many of them around. Can someone tell me how I find out which post-office handles my mail?

I was hoping that there would be some simple notice or form that people would mention, but apparently that's not it. Just one more screwy thing that has seemed to plague my move here. Oh well. Thanks

Vaasa: Can someone tell me how I find out which post-office handles my mail? If you're in the centre, it'll be the one near Kupiec Poznanski - near Wroclawska tram stop.

Ahh, I know that one. I went there to mail some post-cards to family last week. I don't know how close to center I need to be, as I'm closer to Garbary and Krolowej Jadwigi. But I'll see if I can grab a co-worker during lunch and haul them up there. Maybe if I offer to buy lunch. :)

Here in Gdansk I have to go to the post office that handles my post code. A map of the city shows where it is. I always get a notice from the post when I have to go there to pick up something that was delivered when I wasn't home. It's never failed in four years.

I lived near the top end of Garbary and my local post office was by the Muzeum Narodowy.

I never had any problem receiving mail. Are you sure you're giving the address in the right format? It should be:

(for example, of course)

Barack Obama
ul. Pennsylvania 1700/1
00-001 Washington
Poland (if from outside PL)

Instead of 1700/1 (with 1700 being the building number and 1 being the apartment number) it can be written be 1700 m. 1

Ul. is short for ulica (street), Al. short for aleje (avenue). Do not write street or avenue. Use Ul. or Al. is If your street is named after a person (say, ulica Jana Kilinskiego), it doesn't matter if you write Ul. Kilinskiego or Ul. Jana Kilinskiego. Just don't write Ul. Jana.

JohnnyM: Yes, I confirmed the correct format when I had to go to the town hall and register my address as a foreigner. They were the ones who pointed out the landlord had originally given me the wrong postal code.

So I know the mailing address is correct, and in the correct format. The thing that is most odd is that I am not even getting junk mail, not just mail addressed to myself. I can see in my neighbors boxes that there is junk mail being delivered, but nothing has been put in my mailbox in the (nearly) whole month I have been living here. There has to be some flag or something set at the post office that says don't deliver anything to this address. Or at least, that's my best guess.

Polish mail continues to prove itself to be absolutely GHETTO.

My inlaws mailed us some stuff for christmas in one of those padded press and seal bags. While skyping, we opened it up in front of them, pulled out the few things that were inside, whereas then they asked us, "where are the earings?"

What earings.

Apparently my mother in law put earings in there for my wife, in an Apart box, and they got picked off somewhere along the way. The package showed no signs of tampering. Looks like someone peeled the bag open, pulled out the earings and re-sealed it.

Hell, at least this time some of it made it across the pond. My first year in Poland, my mother mailed me out a bunch of things for my birthday, never even made it. Gone.

2 years later, I was in the US, bought a bunch of stuff and mailed it to myself in Poland, even used a Polish mail service in New Jersey, and by the time it got to me it had a big hole punched in it. Nothing was stolen (no expensive items in it, I was just mailing food products I couldn't find in Poland) but if there had been, you can be sure some or all of it would have been gone.

This is the 21st century Poland......and you still have your mail workers routinely stealing $hit from people.

Maybe it was robbed still it the other country? because mail comes from lots of countries and it ends up 'different' when it gets here. when those other countries send mail to countries other than Poland it's ok. that tells me that the problem is in Poland and i have no problem saying that some Polish postal workers are thieving twats.

I also like the way that you use the word "prove" when in reality, you have absolutely no proof. It might have been stolen by US Customs, maybe German Customs, you haven't got a clue.

FUZZY, it was perfectly clear to me that the package was mailed from the US to Poland. Not to start a pi$$ing contest, but Grubas1 needs to read more closely. I think he should start by learning how to register, but that's just me.

I've only had one problem in Poland with the contents of a letter, not package, I sent not arriving intact and minus the contents, but it convinced me that workers in the Polish postal system have xray eyes and sticky fingers.

Honestly, it's a terrible problem with most postal systems. I wouldn't send a thing through a national postal system that wasn't securely tracked and with insurance - be it the German, British, American or Polish systems. Sending something valuable across international borders is just asking for trouble, especially as there's more than just the postal authorities involved.

My inlaws aren't yours inlaws Polish and live in Poland?Correct me if I am wrong but I assumed they are.
mailed us aren't you and your wife in the US? Because that's what you have said.
Now,I will leave it to you guys to connect the facts we have established and answer the $60000 question "Where (in terms of a country)was the package sent from and in what country it was received?
