Internet speed in poland - Does it do what is says on the tin??

Hi. I am with UPC and 'apprently' have a 25mbs connection. I have recently tested it and it seems to be coming int at 4 mbs. Has anyone else noticed an issue like this with their internet connection? I just want to check before i ring up.

It takes about a week to get up to full speed if you leave your modem on constantly, plus the speed will differ depending on the time of day, you will probably average about 12-17 mb/s. I used to get max speed in Poland all the time but the max speed in my area was 1/2 a meg so no big deal anyway.

Most internet companies will use the words 'up to' when in fact you never really achieve the advertised speeds.

Have the tried rebooting your router?

Run a ping test as well "ping -t www.google.co.uk" and see if you have any time-outs or high ping, mine is about 45ms to our servers in the UK.

Can you do this, go to search enter CMD > then a new box will pop up > then enter this exactly as is shown without quotations "ping -t www.google.co.uk" wait for two mins > right click on the box > then hit enter on the keypad and then copy to notepad to see the results.

Could be the upload speed of the server you are requesting from. What happens when you run, say, 4 concurrent requests? A couple of torrent downloads should give you a clear idea.

Generally, though, advertised speeds are rarely if ever achieved. for a 25 meg line you should get 16+ more often than not, though.

Er, pinging reveals nothing about ISP download speeds & bandwidth, only route blockages between host and destination.

Hi. thanks for all those comments. I actually used a tool on testinternetspeed.org and it seems to be doign the ping thing....I think i will take some measurements over the next week. i appreciate it may not be up to 25 mbs but would be expecting more than a 10th of the speed.

That speed test is run by ookla.com who run almost all of the speedtests around and is quite reliable.

I also run this one as it has a lot more optional features www.numion.com/YourSpeed3/

Hi when i get up the command line, i get a line with C:/users.... Do i enter it on this line or do i need to move onto a blank line?

I had the same issue when I upgraded my Neostrada from 1 to 2 Mb. Speed kept 1 MB. When I phoned them, they explained it was because of the fact that you by law you have a certain period (1 or 2 weeks, cannot remember it) to cancel your "umowa". And in that time for some bizarre reasons they were not obliged to do the upgrade.
After that time elapsed the speed would as promised. And it was.
Strange way of thinking somehow :)

Very strange....!!! But why am i not surprised by it.!! :-)
I upgraded some months ago so any 'trial period' shoudl be well and truly over. Just noticed that recently the speed seems to be getting worse and want to follo it up.

The speed is highly dependent on the quality of the phone wires to your house.

And even if you have high quality wires, you usually dont reach the maximum speed.

It could also be down to your router and I would try resetting it first and see if that makes any difference, even by-pass the router by hard wiring if you can.

Routers can be somewhat like filters and they can get clogged up, that's why I always turn my off at night.

Never knew that. i allways leave mine on all the time so i will try switching it off to see if it makes a difference.
