Moving to Poland - When to get Left-hand-drive

Hello

My husband and I are planning to move to Gdansk next May. Now we have thought about moving and about our car... We will have to move (ourselves) by car because we have a dog and so we will have to drive (hardly any airline takes dogs from the UK). We will probably get a removal company to move our stuff. Haven't planned that yet.

So now we are living in England and have a right-hand-drive car which we would quite like to sell here. But how can we get to Poland? I think the removal company will be pretty fed up with us having to stop frequently with the dog and we would want to stay over at my parents in Germany for a night. So we have to travel by car somehow.

Do you think it would be wise (in terms of price) to try and get a left-hand-drive here and then drive across and change the registration in Poland. Maybe a dealer would even take our Citroen C2 as a swap?
Or do you think we should drive to Poland with our C2 and try and sell it there and get a new car over there? Maybe a Polish dealer would be happy for a swap? Just thinking about where we would likely to get the best deal?

Any suggestions welcome.

I see lots of right hand drive cars in warsaw. You would probably be able to sell it without any major hassles.

I can't really answer that, sorry. I have a dog too and kids and if I was to make the drive from the U.K. I would want my own car and then I would worry about selling it once you are settled. I have seen loads of people driving here- maybe you don't need to sell it right away? So at least you will be able to orient yourself and get everything organized without having the added stress of selling the car.

Hi,
I was in the same position as you and your husband 2 years ago. We checked the best options and decided cost wise it was better to sell our right hand car and buy a left hand drive in the uk. We then sent a big amount with a Polish removal company which take your stuff direct from your home and deliver it to your home in Poland. They charge per kilo so be careful what you choose to take and leave we ended up paying around 400 pounds for the removal. It's very difficult to sell a right hand drive car here and also used car prices are much higher here and often in bad shape. The best place to find a lhd is on gumtree.com just search for a car and enter lhd as the keyword. Be careful that the car that you buy is an original lhd as if it's been converted from right to left hand drive and there no documentation to guarantee the parts used are 100% new then it can't be registered here. In the end we found a nice Saab drove with a fully packed car and our dog and took the euro tunnel all worked out well. I hope this helps I will look for the receipt I have from the removal company I can post the details for you. If you have any more questions just drop me a lone :)

You can't register a RHD in Poland, so such a car will only be worth the value of the parts.

Sell the RHD, buy a LHD in the UK and bring it to Poland - much easier.

Incidentally, is your husband Polish?

It's dangerous enough overtaking with LHD in Poland. If you are new to Polish roads, don't try it with RHD.

Thanks all. We will try and look for a LHD (steering wheel is located on the left-hand side of the vehicle) in the UK. @delphiandomine: Nope, my husband is British and I am German.
