Germany are not in better shape than their peers in Greece and I was surprised by their lack in theoretical knowledge although their ethics and behaviour are excellent(Germans pay more attention to character formation than simply stuffing you with knowledge).

I guess that depends on what they are studying and where. In Germany are noticeable differences in quality of universities. The better they are(standard, program), the better u get prepared. I guess it's everywhere in Europe like that.

German universities are not military schools.;-)

southern:
They are not so elitist.Germans require just average marks in Abitur and do not have competitive entrance exams system.

That's not correct.
The better ur average in gymnasium the better the chances u get a place at the uni u want. For some subjects/fields they have numerus clausus and entry tests.

The elite is usually formed at private institutions.

just know ppl who are students in Scotland and England. They were not poor students

That is what I am telling you. They are middle class.Middle class offsprings who fail national exams head for UK where they are accepted or if not to central Europe and if they are 100% incompetent travel to bribe in Romania,Serbia,Bulgaria or if they have a bit less money they bribe in Ukraine,Russia.(much less go there).
It is known what they do.They are now in positions and have caused all the crisis. We talk about bricks. And they want to socialize their failure.Sorry no way.Balkan here.

I can agree with many poeple on here that this whole skirmish we have in the schools goes down to lack of funding or should we say the polish way of doing things (the cheapest way possible). I am all for education but against paper qualification, people cant just go to Universities to earn Degrees so that they can work in Grocery Stores or do some clerical work. When u look at people who graduate, u will find that most are graduating with degrees in Art subjects (5 years of theory work not good for people who are practical) and less in Technical. Which is a bad thing coz right now there is a shortage of Technicaly qualified graduates in the Market and have to rely on other European nations to fill in the gaps.
The level has certainly gone down but there is need for legislation so that education moves in the right direction where students graduate with high skills that are equal to or even better than their peers in other prestigious universities around the world.

This is not true.German universities have very few differences in quality since there are obligatory standards to be met.For example university level in small cities(Heidelberg) and big cities(Hamburg) soes not differ much.

Still not requiring any statistical deviation in performance like the entrance exams for Grand'Ecoles or the high ranking US universities.

Hello. I'm polish. I've reading this forum for couple of days and I found it extremely intresting to find out how foreigners see Poland. I've noticed that here's quite big group of ppl who set their lifes here in Poland, have husbands, wifes and children... CHILDREN! If you have children then they attend school here...
There is a myth that polish educational system has very high level (well it maybe had high level when my parents were attending schools but now after the educational reform in 1999 it dramatically get lower... I know that because Im the first year of its victims ;)

Zetigrek, a recent survey found that the cost of raising a child in the UK to the age of 21 had now topped 200,000 UK pounds, so for all those Anglo/Pole couples, Poland is a real financial option for education and bringing up your child/children.
