Imminent smoking regulations causing headaches for pub owners
"Polish pub and restaurant owners have a month left to prepare separate space for smokers. Where this proves impossible, smokers will have to light it up outside."

More discussions: Do you think a smoking ban would be a good thing in Polish restaurants and Bars?

i noticed this in force in Klub WZ. one half of the club was smoking, the other half was not. there was also the option to go outside.

Something to look forward to when it's minus 20 out.

Comrade, we must now fight for an alcohol ban so that workers may live even happier and healthier lives!

at my watering hole in berlin they have a heated cabin (garden shed) outside. some bar/club owners may do the same here.

Don't be too hasty.

We were the pioneers of this 'wonderful' idea - but also in ways of getting around it (kind of)

The law probably isn't going to be exactly the same in Poland as it is in Ireland though I suppose.

The law won't be the same in Poland, this law is only going to ask owners to introduce serperate area's of the bar for smokers and non-smokers. Some bar owners may wish that only a small area of the bar will be given to non smokers. The 2 bar owners which I'm friends with in Krakow say that most of the customers they have are smokers, therefore they won't be taking much notice of the new "rules".

In Florida, the non-smoking ban is bars is somehow linked to the percentage of the income generated from food sales. I have noticed that if there are two bars next to each other - one smoking allowed one not, the smoking bar is always busier. It makes sense to me - the only time I crave cigarettes is when I'm drinking and socializing.
I see most of the bars investing in an outdoor area, too.

That's about right, comrade. They just can't leave others alone.

That's the free market at work, as it should be. But nannying Leftists don't want the free market to decide when they can decide for everyone...

With the best will in the world, what the fuuck has it got to do to you whether people smoke in Polish bars or not? Do we come to your country and tell you that you don't have the right to own a different gun for each day of the month or that people who drive vehicles that get less than ten miles to the gallon should be used as target practice? No, so kindly keep your nose out of Polish affairs.

Banning smoking should be the same as banning drinking. Alcohol has a more destructive impact in the world than smoking ever could reach.

Congratulations and keep it up! My lungs have got to the point (after smoking for 30 years) that I need to stop right away or become very ill.

A downside of the ban is that in the UK, it has more or less destroyed traditional pub culture, with bars closing down at a shocking rate. My favourite bar in Warsaw is a tiny place and probably 75% of the regulars smoke. It would be a shame to see it go.

probably the big breweries screwing the leaseholders is as much to blame

other downsides include cigarette butts littering the streets and an increase of drunken noisy people outside the pubs instead of inside where they belong

Exactly, though litter is nothing new and I only ever see small groups of mostly middle-aged people by pub doors.

I'm going to fund a study linking children to elevated blood pressure and therefore heart attacks. If this turns out to be verifiable, I would expect an immediate ban on children in private businesses.

there should be gambling allowed in pubs too, then the government could get revenue from 3 sources all at once

These are the unforeseen consequences of nannying regulations.
The free market should be permitted to decide this.

So it's ok to restrict others' freedoms just because of your own personal interests? Seems kinda selfish. And did you smoke in bars when you were still smoking? If so, this would make you a hypocrite...

There is no reason to have smoking bans in this country.
Owners can post a sign in their doors.
'This is a smoking venue.'
'This is a non-smoking venue.'
This simple solution gives owners and customers choices.
Isn't that the Polish way??

that's what everyone said when they decided to ban smoking in bars/restaurants in NYC but since the ban (2003), it's been business as usual. time and time again people prove that smoking or not, they want to go out and drink.

i was a bartender at the time just across the river in New Jersey and the ban made its way to New Jersey a year or two later, had no effect on business. people stepped outside and smoked, and in the winter, they all huddled around the door outside, shivered....and smoked. no different than the crowd of people you see in the winter standing outside of office buildings. no matter how cold it gets, they're out there puffing away.

I don't agree. What do you base this on? Human body produces small amounts of alcohol itself. Cigarettes are just marketing-created need. Maybe real tobacco like in cigars or in a pipe have something to do with taste but definitely not cigarettes (also I recently visited philip morris production plant, very interesting)...

Nobody ever killed anybody because they were driving after smoking a half pack of cigarettes.
Nobody ever shoved a glass into anybody's face because they were feeling angry after smoking a half pack of cigarettes.
Nobody ever beat their wife up because they were got home after smoking a half pack of cigarettes and she asked where they'd been.
Nobody ever got fired because they kept showing up to work after smoking a half pack of cigarettes.
Nobody ever ended up living at the central station because they spent all their money on cigarettes.

Exactly, but, unfortunately it's not the Polish way.
