We all have heard the stories about our glorious ancestors who came to the US with one and a half dollar in their pockets and after years of hard work they became rich thanks to their talent. How is it possible to make a fortune if coming to Poland with one dollar? There must be some opportunity.

If it's a one dollar coin, you could let a Krakowian and a Poznzniak get in a tug-of-war with it and make a kilometre of wire.

The dollar from way back represented more than today's dollar. You could make a dollar stretch a week or so because stuff was only about five or ten cents. That was long enough to feed them for the first week, until they found jobs, assuming they weren't pick pockets or other thuggish criminals involved in organized crime rackets. Then, they could make money rather quickly.

My first job in US was for room and board. I got a cot behind the backgrounds at a photo studio. You have to take care of essentials first.
Then I wanted better food so I got an evening job as a busgirl in an italian seafood restaurant.

Is it?

Let's see.... he could be a pimp, gigolo, male stripper, gold-digger, or as has become famous in Japan: a call-boy that gets paid for hanging around ugly old women and telling them they're beautiful while offering the occasional sex.

Good to hear :-) My parents share similar stories being immigrants themselves...always makes me wonder how many people my age can mope around so much living in nice big houses with their parents.

Hey! It wasn't that long ago! ;)
It can be done today. Find somebody who is doing a sh!tty job and tell whoever is paying them that you can do it much better and cheaper. Is US, many opportunities are thwarted by virtually non-existing public transportation, but in Poland it should be easier, just from that aspect alone.

Ouch.. my son is older than you..
A year or so ago, I told the owner of a beachside club (that I frequest on Sunday afternoons, for their live Jamaican bands), that he needed more help behind the bar. I ended up tending it that Sunday, and couple of Sundays after that.. working in full view of the ocean, min $200 in tips.. that was a sweet little gig. Until the word got out and my son and his crew started showing up. I just could not keep slinging gin to 'my kids', it didn't feel right.
