There are no promises or oaths involved.

And a promise to act in the best interest of a new country is something you'd have problem with?

Long term residency has nothing to do with allegiance.

No argument there. Still, how convenient...

If there is a conflict of interest involved, yes. It's more or less a moot point considering the current political situation. But, if it came down to it, would you break the oath that you took by choice, or would you give up allegiance to your birth country?

I know that decision depends on the circumstances, but it's a valid question. If you are willing to break the oath, why not just be satisfied with long term residency? Is there a reason to take citizenship other than convenience?

richasis:
How convenient.

Isn't it? And just about every country has a mechanism to allow someone of another country to stay without taking an oath of allegiance.

Britain had a vested interest in entering a war: her freedom

LOL, Britain was already free! Epic fail on your behalf! Had we thrown our lot in with Germany we'd have been quids in..unfortunately we lost out because we backed a dead donkey!

BevK:
What you are posting is like me talking about car mats and you talking about Jaffa Cakes, but today is simply not the day for such a debate

You are talkin' broken biscuits...

I, for one, admire your self-sacrificial act of living outside of your own country - all in the name of charity.

I came to Poland at the express invitation of the Polish government to help Poland. Please use your own standards to judge only yourself.

Bzibzioh:
You can love two mothers. You are not committing treachery by loving them equally. At least I care about them.

And two wives as well no doubt. But you did not promise to love them equally: you said "“ I, [name], do Solemnly swear (affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors according to law, forever. So help me God." Nothing there about Poland and Poland being equal. So tell us, are you a traitor to the land of your birth(and the land which you lecture us about) or to the country which you asked to become a member of and the Queen of which you swore true allegiance to? Either way you're a traitor.

Well, most Poles think nothing of shag@in about in the uk whilst having a wife back home so it probably means nothing to them swearing this!

She didn't ask me to forsake all others. Canada doesn't require exclusivity of citizenship nor is Poland (nor many other counties). So if neither Canada nor Poland have no problem with dual citizenship your treachery claim is just your opinion really. And I believe I told you already how highly I value them.

Well, as the former is a conscious decision while the latter the result of mere chance, I'd say the former.

Ultimately, where would the (most espoused) West be - the likes of America - if this were not the case?

Harry:

Too bad the country of your allegiance did not similarly flatter you.

Harry:
Please use your own standards to judge only yourself.

Nah...I like your self-sanctimonious standards:
Harry:
I have never sworn an oath of aligance to the leader of a foreign country. You have. And you did it purely for personal gain. Traitor.

...which proves disappointing. Still, I do maintain my offer of a beer (or two) upon my arrival to Warsaw :)

So as far as you're concerned you can be true and faithful to your Queen provided that she doesn't ask you to do anything against Poland? Nice, a country gives you shelter, food, housing, work, citizenship, the lot, and in exchange you decide that your oath doesn't mean what it says but rather what you want it to say. No wonder Poland told you that your services were no longer required. We can tell that Poland had no use for a traitor like you.

richasis:

I've never pledged my allegiance to any country and I would most certainly never do so in the future: I've spent all but two years of my life living in countries which I was not a national of and am very used to living as a foreigner: I'm not going to swear allegiance to a foreigner just in order to get paperwork that makes my life easier (unlike some of the Polish patriots who post here).

Nope. She simply asked me to behave and act in the best interest of the new country so I said yes as I have no problem with that.

Except Poland didn't say that at all.

We? Seriously?
Unlike you, I love Poland and I always will no matter what [Euphemism Alert] useless nation-free opportunistic guest of Poland like you say. Especially the sort of house-guest who mocks your furnishings, disdains your cooking, steps on your cat and leaves your spare room a mess.

Or opportunists. It isn't unusual here for people to pick the side with the upper hand and ignore all other factors, Derek.

Lets not forget that Poland was the only conquered country without a Quisling government.

Yes, you just don't love Poland enough to actually live here. In fact you don't even like Poland enough to live here. You feel so little love for Poland that you took citizenship of another country and pledged allegiance to the Queen of that country (and now you lie about what that oath said). That really is true love!

And that it wasn't given the chance to have one. It's not like there was a huge shortage of Poles who were willing to join the Nazi war effort.

Hitler wanted to form an alliance with them when he first came to power, he was even far more liberal than Stresemann initially, but at every turn the Poles and Pilsudski rejected him. Unlike some they weren't prepared to go to bad with the Nazis.

I must admit that those who gain 'Polish Citizenship' just to obtain an 'EU Passport' (no such thing) doesn't sit too well with me.

While I don't know about anyone here personally, I know of a person who literally thanked Poland for their new life in ... France!

When I confirmed my Polish citizenship, I was asked where in Europe I might live. Some thought I was crazy when I said 'Poland'.

Yes, you do. And that's all. Geographical location. No emotional attachment on your part. But again: you are not attatched to any particular nation so I'm not surprised you don't understand what it feels like. I pity you, honestly.

Traitor.

So is this your a new favorite key-word? Got tired of the old good "LIAR' all the time? I love the way you call me names as if it makes the slightest bit of difference but that's all you've got so enjoy! :)))
