I know it's been mentioned before but why don't we have emoticons here on PF??? :(

Many of us speak different languages "at home" and when we all gather here on PF and start typing in English sometimes it's really hard to know if a person is being sarcastic, playful, or angry, etc. Adding an emoticon to a sentence would clear out any misunderstandings.

So why this blatant anti-emoticon bias and the apparent anti-yellow racism from the PF staff? (I'm kiddin' emoticon - if I had one ;)

What do you mean? The yellow of the smiles?

Of course, what else? O.o?

See, a smiley would've clarified my position.

Sorry admin but many of those "smileys" you showed me are just hard to understand.

O.o means confused? Really??

Heck those "smileys" would make some posts even more confusing.... :-7 or was it ':-/. ??? Forgot Sarcasm alert

I don't know, this is the only forum I have ever been on so I know nothing different.

I agree with the sarcasm part, it is sometimes difficult to judge, with our different use of language, when someone is being sarcastic.

I thought the whole reason that we don't have jumping flashing things like emotions or avatars is because it is thought to subtract from the content of the written word, which seems to be what should be the main emphasis. I could be wrong.

Sorry Sean, didn't have enought time to edit. The 15 minute rule kills me when I reply from my iPhone. I said "what else" to make a point that some expressions are just hard to portray in words.

This: :-7

is supposed to mean this:
Sarcasm alert

...but it doesn't.

So I was wondering if we could incorporate them here?

Here's a forum I frequently visit, see how they've incorporated smilies in the reply function.

http://www.pprune.org/military-aircrew/333897-raaf-flight-screening-pr ogram-merged.html

Not sure how to copy & paste it here (doesn't seem to work?) but when hitting reply I get some 40 choices of smileys to chose from - all from awe, panic, indignation, sarcasm, sexy, ubercool to zing.

Yeah, I think, I could be wrong, that Admin is trying to avoid this place from turning in to a chat room, with all the girlie emotions and things that distract from the actual content.
Can you not use the emotional dancing thingys in a sarcastic way that would still be difficult for people to understand?
I noticed that even the emotion you did use had a sign saying ''sarcasm alert'', which makes me think it is not easy to use them for that without spelling it out?

Anyway I think that most of the posters in here don't have any emotions as they are a crude form of A.I., that's why we continuously have the same threads and same posts over and over...
Except for your good self and a few others, of course but I wonder about myself :)

Ha, ha... That's a good point.

Well, I don't know, but I often struggle with figuring out if a person is serious or not. To me smileys immitate facial expressions which make communicating sooo much easier. On gazilion occations I've been told that I have hard time detecting sarcasm so I guess a smiley would simplify things for me. Anyways, I think I simplified version of it would enrich this website but that's just my take on it.

For now I guess it's

No smiley

Sad

Maybe, I don't know.
As I said I am used to this so it doesn't bother me much.

I tell you what I don't like, when people abbreviate words or whole sentences, that sometimes confuses me and never seems right.
Like roflmao, I have to then look up what they mean, a pointless exercise in itself. It is like we are degenerating back to grunts, well that's how I see it.

Ha, yeah I know what you mean. Here's an online translator if you ever need one, just type the acronym in the search engine.

As far as "degenerating" - maybe that's just how it's supposed to be?

Our future?
