When moderating:

A NEWLY-CREATED THREAD

1. Admin or moderators look at the title of the thread and read the first post.

2. If the title of the thread does not adequately present the content of the first post, the title is edited so that it better reflects the content. This way the readers don't have to waste their time browsing or clicking on inadequate threads.

AN EXISTING THREAD (outside the Off-Topic forum discussions which are loosely moderated)

1. Admin or moderators look at the title of the thread (and recall what the thread is about based on the first post in this thread).

2. Then they read or scan posts in this thread. If a post or group of posts clearly do not discuss the subject/issue that was presented in the first post, such posts are likely to be moved to the Random Chat thread.

So looking at the subject always helps in composing a relevant post in a particular thread.

The idea has been there for about two years now ever since the website was created ;).

If you mean the name of the poster - it cannot be changed. Only the title may be changed... How much it will be changed - it depends on the particular user (fortunately most users know how to create a good topic title...).

The topic will be on your profile page.

If the thread topic changes. It also changes in your profile.
I imagine most people can remember the topics they have posted, so it shouldn't be hard to find.

Recently, Bubbles started a thread for a translation of 'Giddy up'.
It rapidly descended into chat, but early on in procedings, one or two translations were made.
Why was the whole thread moved to Random Chat rather than just the chatty posts?

You mean this one I assume - polishforums.com/giddy_up-16_13318_0.html. As you notice it now has 68 posts (even though the question was answered in the first few posts; the remaining posts are just off-topic chats between members). Why it was moved? Because it takes much less time to move the whole topic than to select each message and move it. In addition, the author of the thread herself engaged in off-topic chats, so if she didn't care, why should we care? :)

on that point, most of the topic was filled with references to 'giddy up' so it should have stayed right were it was :) maybe :)

I recently posted a poll on the topic 'Should the Polish Government Bulldoze Aushchwitz?'...I posted this topic because my feeling is that the deaths of victims of WWII are used for political ends, and that this is a form of desecration...With the poll, I also included a short introduction to the topic, and my feelings on how a more dignified memorial could be constructed. I knew this would be a controversial topic, but one in which many Poles and those of Polish descent would have an interest.

Well, perhaps it is because I do not know how to use the text editor properly, or perhaps because some moderators felt the topic too controversial, but when I look at the forum today, I see my introduction and explanation has been deleted, leaving only 'Should the Polish Gov't etc...'

By deleting my introduction, it takes the poll out of context...It can be easy to manipulate what someone says when this technique is used...But as I said, perhaps it is just my ignorance in using the text editor...But, when I posted the poll, I clearly saw that replies were enabled, thus allowing discussion of the topic...Now all you get to do is vote...I imcluded choices of Yes, No, Maybe to encourage discussion...But now, no discussion is possible.

When you have a real election, of couse you make a choice to vote for one or the other...But, this choice is supposed to take place in the context of debate as to what the candidates stand for, or what the issues are...There must be a context.

I eat my words...I see now that it was my ignorance of how the poling thread works...Topic is still available for discussion in context...Please excuse me, I have an injured back, and my 'computer savvy' is suffering because of it.
