Is there not a way in which the site could be automatically updated without having to refresh it?

Would that not make it a chat room?

Sometimes I think the only difference between this forum and a chat room is the speed in which it functions, well that and many of my off topic posts.

It is possible using a script, But is something really annoying in my opinon. Many times it will refresh while you are reading something and you will need to find again the last point.

It seems below software doing that.

What you see is the content of your browser cache. To refresh the page you would either have to click the Refresh button (duh...) or use some scripting as Mephias said. The problem with the latter is that many people have disabled Javascript, Java and ActiveX due to security concerns and a scripting solution therefore wouldn't work.
