Yes. It's my first language, although I don't speak it as fluently as I would like to : )

I am finding it hard to place my vote. Can there be a category of "Yes, just enough to get me into lots of trouble" please

Bits and pieces of what I remember as a small child from my grandmother, and bits and pieces from friends, as well as a few attempts at studying a verb book, phrase book, etc.

Sum total. Well, I did get around Poland on my own. But a lot of people laughed at me. :-)

I'd say I learn Polish in equal thirds from:

an old book
some old people
some old forum

Having a large drink doesn't usually make people feel like they're young, but some can revert back to the language of their toddlerhood, only usually with a little more swearing than most toddlers can manage.

Tak, kto nie ma brzucha, ten kiepsko rucha ;)

Howzat?

Seriously tho, how well I speak depends on the company I am in and how fresh I am.

As foreigners go, pretty decent.

Polish is my first language, but people don't understand what i'm saying... maybe because they don't speak Polish...

It's not the easiest language, I'll give you that. Just ask anyone who's learning it.

I think you're confusing Polish and Dutch.

And surely you're not nearly intelligent enough to learn any foreign language.

Yes, German or Dutch would be considered more gutteral.....Polish is to me more a language of shhh....szzzzz.......and several other varieties of related sounds, all sounding similar to me, but hugely different to the Polish ear!
Lir  Dec 18, 08, 21:22    #25
Polish is usually a softly spoken language . I think Dutch language sounds quite good too. I agree though that German would be more gutteral than Polish. I suppose Dutch language would be between Polish and German in the sounds it makes when it is spoken ?

You're joking? Have you heard people speak Dutch? I used to work in both Holland and Germany and Dutch is far more coarse and guttural than German IMO. It has my vote for the ugliest sounding language in Europe...

For me Polish sounds like "itchy shishy witchy". Thats how the English side of my family joke about it anyway...!
Lir Edited by: Lir  Dec 19, 08, 02:34    #29
No , I wasn't joking . Although I haven't heard as much Dutch being spoken as I have never been to Holland. I suppose we don't al hear sounds in the same way.
