Suggestion - ignore unregistered users

alexw68  Jul 8, 11, 10:40    #1
Hi,

Given that 8 in 10 of unregistered users are spammers or trolls, can we have them automatically display as ignored, please?

Rather this than ban outright in order to allow those with something useful to say the opportunity to do so.

Make sense?

the majority of posts in random chat belong to members.

spammers are dealt with almost immediately

trolls can be members or guests who sometimes contribute valid posts.

some posters are long term who have never registered and never caused problems.

a large number register and then never post.

As the forum has been rather peaceful over the past couple of days can i ask what prompted you to make the opening post. have you come across threads that need cleaning ?

No, nothing drastic - and I agree that there isn't a perfect correlation between unregistered members and trolling/spam - far from it. It was more a broad-brush view and seemed (still seems) like a good idea to me. These are sometimes the best times to have such ideas, not during moments of crisis management :)

25 minutes for a competent coder to add the same routine that filters ignored users to any post where the user ID is null or zero.

Of course the right way to do this is via karma-filtering (see slashdot.org) - I don't buy the view that on balance trolls will support trolls and therefore game the system (which was one of the objections made a little while back) because regular users have, and normally will have, a numerical ascendancy over trolls in any forum.

i can't argue with that.

The only problem with that is that on slashdot, comment threads end up being a couple of posts deep at a maximum, and are generally just replies to the OPs questions as opposed to a running conversation. Here you'd end up with people moderating down valid opinions that they don't agree with and disrupting the flow of the thread.

....my two cents.

For very large values of 2 :)

Actually that's something I wasn't taking fully into account - the group psychology of slashdot is more uniform - ie, minor local flare-ups notwithstanding, there is a general agreement on founding principles, and a desire to inform.

PF users do have the desire to inform - but it is adversarial to the max :)

I'd like Lyzko to register. He/she has been encouraged to do so but doesn't see the need. It would be good as sometimes you want to contact people regarding sth that might be a little off-topic though still connected in some way.

I'd say the proportion is more like 2 in 10, not 8 in 10..

I agree. I seldom run into an unregistered member who causes nuisance. Actually, I don`t remember when the last time was. Registered users like me are much bigger problem.

Alex, any examples?

I agree too. In fact, many unregistered members provide one of the most interesting comments (because they can only see/participate in Poland-related discussions and don't have access to the Off-topic forum and other distracting features).

Yes.

It is, therefore, even greater riddle why they don`t want to register.

Why do people always wish to exert control and censor?...Internet forums are a bastion of free speech for the average man or woman, who has absolutely no access to any kind of major media...It is the essence of grass roots...But yet, and ironically enough especially with those who would lay claim to 'liberal world view', we see the constant 'running to matka' or, perhaps the running to the school marm, for protection against the big bad internet wolves who disagree with them.

This is mostly due to lack of imagination, or lack of tolerance, as one can easily 'switch the channel' or, better yet, make an intelligent or humorous reply.

Many potentially interesting perspectives are lost through tight censorship. However, unregistered users are not always fountains of wisdom IMHO

What are you drivelling on about man? The whole point is that these unregistered users are hidden, not censored. The reader is quite at liberty to open up and view if they so choose.

Pawian said it very well above. If, or rather when, unregistered users say something of value and they post repeatedly from a non-registered account, it's a bit of a bloody mystery why they don't register.

I agree with this guy. As opposed to this person with that 'liberal world view' who always advocates censoring others:

It may be better they remain unregistered. There are PF members dropping in on occasion, just to say hello to other members. They're letting us know they're still alive. I think it'd be good to delete inactive accounts, ones that haven't entered any comments in 3+ months. Banish them I say! Lol.

A sincere thanks PF, for putting up with me FIVE terrific years, muah!

Have you forgotten the time when your where an unregisterd user? We defended your right to be one, despite other members` admonitions to ban you.

A big thanks to Admin, for bringing back our pics :) Much appreciated guys!

What pictures? I don't see any pictures?

As far as the non-registered users I don't mind them at all. When I found this message board I became a member on the same day, never posted as a non-member and never will, I guess I don't see any advantageous of being a non-member? Do you??

However, let them flourish if they want to keep it that way...

How about a free membership to those who register and make the non-members pay to post? LOL

I see a tiny box next to the name but when I click on it I see nothing.

Is this an iPad thing?

Click on the name of the user, their profile comes up and they have a picture embedded in the profile page.

There might be some logic to ignoring unregistered ppl.
I was a "reader only" until I joined PF.
I didn't participate until I joined and introduced myself to the group de jour.
I guess I didn't feel like I was really a "part of the conversation" until I joined the forum.

Same here. I suddenly learned it was more fun to participate, as opposed to merely being a reader.

Aha, to see the picture I must click on the NAME, not the picture icon! Got it now, thanks. Why not have the pic right next to the name, click-less if you so will, is it possible? Just curious.

Maybe we need an "assistance required, easily confused" membership level?
