Fashion and Style in Poland

Actually, no - I work as a community interpreter and so get to travel on public transport (and walk) over large areas of London, from Lewisham to Redbridge to Waltham Forest to Enfield and beyond... And I'm very rarely bowled over by what I see... People wear gray, black, brown, and more black. And it's not stylish, not a dress code, and not tourists either. I think I'll start taking pictures ;-)

I posted a link to some Polish street fashion earlier in this thread. By street fashion I mean regular people out walking the streets, not dressed to impress out on a weekend night ;-)
This is precisely what I miss - ordinary folks brave enough to wear interesting stuff. Colourful, vintage, remade, turned inside out... or store-bought clothes, maybe even Primark, but put together in an inventive way.

The style in ShoHo is very edgy and street... the kids still dress to impress, but in a different way - no suits or LBDs (little black dresses). I can't even begin to describe the look... mainly lots of art students in E1 / N1 which I guess influences things. Also a bit of a burlesque / fettish element too.

Ooh, you just reminded me of these rather frightening Emo crazes going round too, kids dressing like something from an Edward Scissor hands spin-off series, with half a hair cut and the remaining locks glued down one side of their faces.

No no no. You see, "fashion" in America starts in California. (like in Europe most of it starts in Paris, from what I hear)

You see, every teen in America "learns" what to wear, say, eat, drink, and look like from tv shows like "The Hills" and all that gay crap. Something starts getting popular in California, and in 6 months it will get popular in New York. Thats how it works 99.9% of the time now a days. With the long hair though, they all just sort of grew out the hair on their own. Nobody on TV had long hair, even bam Margera (who is a god to the skating world because he makes an @ss of himself on TV, he's funny but he can't skate worth $hit) had short hair when all of this started. Tony Hawk = short hair also. All of the big name skaters had short hair when all these kids started growing their's out. Thats why it surprised me...and kind of grosses me out because half of them have really disgusting hair when its long...they just don't know how to keep themselves clean I guess.

OMIGOD.. dont even get me started on Californian 'fashion'. I may not be American, but even I know that the fashion capital of the USA is New York.

no - they look cool and vaguely hip, but I don't think that I could describe them as iconic or "out there".



Exactly....New York fashion week is a global event. Sure, some styles hail from the the west coast (bubblegum pink velour tracksuit with writing on the arse, anyone?), but I'd not say that california was the mecca for high fashion.

You are being generous - I wouldnt even go that far; jeans and top doesnot cool and hip make, especially when the jeans are from some way past season.

The average bod on the Polish street, pretty much like the average bod on the British street, is not particularly well dressed and follows whatever fashion is dictated to them by the high street chains.

That said, many of my older Polish friends have a very unique style of their own, which I would hardly call fashionable but is pretty often cool. There is a lot of individualism amongst my Polish friends which I admire.

Yeah - you're right. I guess I liked the photography more than the clothes. There was a certain "don't mess with me" attitude coming across in some of them (and a spot of nerdy exchange student in the other LOL!).

They were the coolest shoe shop in London at one time, i remember paying £150 for a pair of 'Booga' boots about 10 years ago! (er, not that i'm that old, like)

Aye, footware is very, VERY important but i refuse to spend silly money on shoes these days, wasted way to much cash in the past.

Cool doesnt have to mean expensive.

The first things i look at when I meet people is their eyes, their posture, shoes and their watch. You can tell alot about a person by their shoes and watch.

Totally agree - in fact I believe that there is something distinctly uncool about a totally polished look that is head to toe in lables.

sometimes expensive can look very cheap...ie look at anything that Paris Hilton wears.

Fair point, although one would have to be particularly skilled to make the outfit in the top pic not look cheap :D

check out this guy Arkadius - he is a Polish designer who made it in Britain. He is really interesting.

Not come across him before, but he's got some really cool designs.
