Generally it used to mean "writing letters" to each other and exchanging news, pics or whatever and maybe meeting up.

No problem ;)

Generally its a good way to learn about other countries etc. In school we were encouraged to get a penpal in another country and mines was in Germany :)

True in some cases. I suppose a more modern way is to email each other but it's not the same as an actual hand written letter.

Traditional Letters are always good, I haven't wrote one in a while hence the reason for my atrocious handwritting! I filled out my RAF application form, looked at it and realised a 5 year olds is tidier then mine!

Mind you the last letters I actually wrote were to Poland :)

Yeah we were encouraged to have a penpal - French or Spanish [whichever you were learning obv]. I wish I'd taken them up on it! I was good in class at Spanish, but have fogotten most everything I learned! If I had made a penfriend perhaps I would have been encouraged to keep up with the learning.

Almost had a penfriend from Ireland once, but I was very lazy. I'd written to her father when I was in primary because we had to write to our favourite authors. I didn't really have one back then - but I'd seen a film 'The Butcher Boy' and wrote to the author of the book it was based on. Patrick McCabe. One of his daughters wrote back instead because her dad was very busy, which was so nice of her. I should have written to her but I wasn't interested in reading books nor writing letters or anything else at the time. Strange since these are now two of my favourite hobbies!

I'd apply caution myself, yeah.

I just surprise my friends... ;)

but seriously, I have two penfriends at the moment, both in the Scottish Borders. They both lived here before and when each left it was kind of taken that we wouldn't keep in touch by phone etc but that letters would be nice.

strange:)

Unless you're one of those people who forgets what you were about to say and you only remember at some odd hour of the night-time.
Or if your friend you're writing to always interrupts you during your best monologues.

Lol! Like to think I do that now and again too hehe!

Maybe if these things happened now I would have had pen friends. I also nearly had one from Banbury and one from Fife. But like I said - I was too lazy back then.

I suppose email is a good way to start off a pen friendship..exchange a few emails and when you trust the other person enough, exchange addresses.
