Polish cities hold a plethora of festivals throughout the year. These performances range from medieval street theaters to smoky jazz sessions, from student "crazy" days to serious classical music performances or from sailor festivals by the seaside to folklore festivals in the mountains. The following are some of Poland ’s well known festivals as well as some lesser known ones that occur on a yearly basis.
February
Shanties - one of the biggest festivals in Europe that takes place in Krakow . The purpose of the festival is to commemorate and celebrate old sailors’ songs.
Musica Polonica Nova - International festival of contemporary music that takes place in Wroclaw . The beginning of the festival dates back to as early as 1962.
March
Festival of Stage Songs (Przeglad Piosenki Aktorskiej) - takes place in Wroclaw . The festival belongs to the oldest and most well-established Polish stage festivals where Polish, as well as international, performers take part.
April
Gdansk International Guitar Festival - Guitar competition attracting guitarists from all over the world.
International Festival of Films for Children and Youth - the festival takes place in Poznan and its main goal is to present and promote films for children.
May
Festival of Student Song - festival that takes place in Krakow and has a special spot in the Polish cultural calendar. This event is considered to be the biggest song festival in Poland with performances by the best student vocalists and accompanists.
Poznan Jazz Fair - an event held annually in May. This fair represents a gathering of the best jazz musicians from all over the globe.
Cracow Film Festival - the oldest film festival in the country with its beginnings dating back to 1961. At that time it was known as The Cracow Short Film Festival, but its new name (Cracow Film Festival) was changed in 2001.
Juwenalia - the festival that is organized throughout the country. It is a student carnival with parades, masquerades, concerts, dancing and fancy dress.
June
Festival of Polish Song – a festival that made Opole , the city where the festival is held, recognized as the capital of Polish song. The festival is considered to be a big event in Poland .
Mozart Festival - held in Warsaw every year. It commemorates the work of the “genius" with renditions of his operas, symphonies, and chambers.
Festival of Folk Bands and Singers - takes place in Kazimierz Dolny (southwest of Poland ) and is a festival that promotes authentic country music traditions.
Jewish Culture Festival - organized in Krakow , is a wonderful opportunity for Jewish and non-Jewish people to meet. With hundreds of performances from all over the world, the festival commemorates the living Jewish tradition.
July
Festival of Film Starts - annual event in Miedzyzdroje with gatherings of artists, movie stars, musicians, etc. Famous also for "Promenade of Stars" with hand imprints of stars.
International Street Festival - that takes place throughout Poland in cities such as Gdansk , Torun , Warsaw or Krakow .
Warsaw Summer Jazz Days - concerts from the most prominent artists throughout the world on a Polish stage.
FAMA, known as Festival Artystyczny Mlodziezy Akademickiej. It is one of the most important cultural events in students’ environment. The city of Swinoujscie , where the event is held, attracts students from all over Poland who are ready to present their artistic ideas.
Picnic Country - annual festival in Mragowo that attracts international country artists.
August
Dominican Fair - is a festival in the city of Gdansk with numerous musical events, parades, firework displays, artistic shows as well as sports contests.
Chopin Festival - the most prestigious classical festival in Poland that takes place in Duszniki Zdroj.
International Song Festival - organized in Sopot, is one of the biggest events in Poland where artists from all over the world compete for the Grand Prix.
International Festival of Mountain Folklore - held in Zakopane since 1968. The aim of the festival is to bring the living tradition of folklore of the world to the audience.
September
Festival of Polish Piano Music - is the festival of Slupsk that attracts pianists from all over Poland to take part in a competition.
Warsaw Autumn - held since 1956 and dedicated to contemporary music.
October
Warsaw Film Festival - an event that promotes films that cannot be seen in Polish movie theatres.
Jazz Jamboree - held in Warsaw , is one of the biggest Jazz festivals in Poland with the most remarkable artists from all over the globe.
Festival of Early Music - is an international festival with venues in Warsaw , Cracow and other cities in Poland with a review of the Polish early music ensembles (Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque and the like).
Regardless of the season, people can partake in a variety of festivals as mentioned above. Next time you visit Poland remember to visit one, or many, of the festivals and be sure to have a good time.
