it depends. Fire = ogień, but if you want to say about fire in the house or fire in the woods you would say pożar.

Ogien? Or is this flame as in a lighter?

"Fire!" = Pali się! (lit. "It smokes itself!")....moral of the story? Where there's smoke, there's fire. -:) LOL

Not so simple and straight forward as you think.

Pali mnie słońce, Pali się światło, Pali mnie w gardle, Pali mi się do pracy, Pali mu się grunt pod nogami: yet there’s no smoke nor fire. Just like in English a word can have many meanings. If you were to translate an old flame from english to polish you would not use direct translation of the word flame, same thing goes for polish to english translations.

For all you pyromaniacs out there here’s couple words to get you started (no pun intended)
Dopalić = ?
Napalić = ?
Odpalić = ?
Przypalić = ?
Wypalić = ?
Zapalić = ?
You will have to look it up yourself though, after all I don’t want you to go Nero on me and burn PF down. There’s a fair share of flamers here as it is.

BTW Seanus flame is płomyk, when asking for a light you use ogień.

In that case, 'palić'/'palić się' (root word 'pal-') must literally mean 'heating up' as in a blaze, correct? I was wrong about 'smoking'! I should have remembered the word 'upal' = a sweltering heat.-:) LOL

You forgot about "fire" as in "fire a gun". That would be "strzelic/strzelac/wystrzelic".

"It smokes itself" doesn't make any sense in Polish. "to smoke" would be "wedzic" as in "wedzic wedliny, kielbasy etc." I apologize for not using Polish characters :)

And another thing, "pal" is not just a root for "palic" etc. It is also a ... noun.

The problem is that I had to look it up in a dictionary, which is really second best to a native speaker giving some explanation. I merely hoped to jog someone's memory. Obviously I was just too cryptic. I'll keep everything simple from now on, shall I?
