The type of breakfasts i eat in poland a pretty much as described by kasper in the post you linked to... the only hot dish i have had have been eggs... scrambled, fried or boiled...

Quoting Kasper

"Good Polish breakfast is usually chleb (bread), an assortment of szinki (cold meats), eggs are popular too. My family usually has cottage cheese/farm cheese as well.

A really big brekkie may include some cold smoked fish, a cold salad and some other nice things including the best bread money can buy and freshly churned, lightly salted butter."

I'm looking for a good recipe for the milky rice and apple dish.

It seemed a fairly common, and simple dish. I made something pretty close, but didn't seem quite right. Any help?

My Grandma used to make a very simple spinach soup using milk (or maybe it was cream), spinach, and vinegar. It was a very liquidy soup, very thin, not thick. Does anyone have a recipe that is close to that?

Rice and apple dish

11/2 cups of rice
2 apples
1.5 cup milk
1.5 cup water
1 teaspoon butter
cinamon
1/2 cup sugar
Margarine to spread on bottom of baking dish

Boil rice in water mixed with milk. add salt and butter. Pare and core apples. slice thinly. Each slice put in sugar and cinamon. Spread margarine onto baking dish. Put rice on bottom, cover with the apples and repeat. The top layer should be covered with rice.

You can spread sweetened cream over the rice to bake nicer. Put in oven (350) for 1/2 hour. Serve hot with vanilla sugar.

When I was a kid an aunt of mine made a good, sweet bread called Babka. It had golden raisins in it. She always made it around Easter time. Do you have this recipe? I am also looking for Beet soup. I know it contains beets, pork bones and sourcream. Please let me know if you have both of these. I would appreciate it.

I'd browse through this cuisine area. I know there are Barszcz recipes floating around. Not too sure about the babka though. You can just google that.

POLISH CHEESECAKE

Krisia,

I read about a cheesecake called_Sernik_ It was described as having cheese, raisins and a crumbly, golden crust. Is this the recipe you gave? but with the raisins added?

Also, is _farmers cheese_ the same as cottage cheese?

Thanks.

Baba, I know what you're talking about. I don't know it by that name though. I knew it as sedek (not sure of spelling but I pronounce it 'see deck'). My grandmother and mother always made it for Easter. They've both passed and I'm sorry I don't have their recipe as that was my favorite Easter food. It's a little late for Easter but here's a recipe that I just came across. Now I'm craving it. lol

Easter Cheese

1 qt milk
12 eggs
1 tsp. salt
1 Tbls. sugar

Heat milk, add beaten eggs, salt and sugar. Cook on very low heat, stirring it constantly with a wooden spoon. Stir until the mixture is thick and separated from water. Pour into cheese cloth, tie top of the cheese cloth to form a ball and hang to let it drain. Let it get completely cold and slice when needed.

Thank you for the correct name Krysia. We never called it by name so I guess I probably heard the name when I was a kid, thought they said sedek and called it that ever since. lol

Does anyone have a recipe for good, traditional Polish cookies? I have a close Polish friend who is a big fan of desserts and I wanted to bake something for him. He likes the ram's horn (?) cookies. Is there anything similar to those?
