OK, so Polish christmas food was nice but I really fancy a decent steak and open to suggestions on where is best place. I mean a more formal place - bearnaise, mash, spinach, decent glass of red wine.

I have tried the Intercontinental which was much hyped - most of the meal was great but steak was a disappointment !
Also tried Butcher and Wine and liked the meat but think the tables are a bit close together and its a bit too full of suits.

Hard Rock, Champions etc all OK but looking for somewhere less noisy !

Any other gems I dont know about ?

Which steak did you have there? I had the Iowa Longhorn and was not impressed: it was decent but nothing more. But my friend's Charolais was superb.

The steak at 99 was pretty good but again the tables are very close together and it's fairly corporate.

My tip would be Na Zielnej. It's where KOM used to be (the PAST building) and where I had two of my best three meals of 2011. In November it was the concierges of Warsaw's top hotels voted it most impressive restaurant in Warsaw. The steak comes from the same cows that Butchery & Wine have.

And I have never had a steak at Sense which was less than good.

Adler on ul. Mokotowska. I have always had great steak there. They are not specialist in steak but the one they have is pretty good. Believe it or not the London Steak house was also good. We went in there once on an impulse and the food was not bad.

but I think Adler is probably the best I have had.

An excellent place. Deserves to have queues outside but doesn't. Das Elefant in pl. Bankowy (and the other one next to it too) was good but is now shut. U Szweika is disappointing - they tend to overcook them. I don't normally like shopping malls, but Courtepaille in Arkadia does a good steak. Lamb too.

I used to write for a paper which held staff meetings in the London steak house (barter deal for an advert) every fortnight. Over three years I must have had 50 steaks there. Never had a bad one. But equally, never had an excellent one. And everything other than the steak is terrible!

you are right- it wasn't bad- but not the best I have had.

I forgot to mention about a shop on Pulawska- Befsztek. It is an organic butcher and their meat is amazing. They have a website and they deliver- you can also buy a bottle of wine from Mielzynski......but of course, this is only if you would rather make a meal at home.

I think that also one's expectations come into play there (i.e. looking at the place (and the staff) one is expecting it to be utterly terrible).

OK will give zielna a whirl and report back.

I had the charolais in Intercontinental - maybe overcooked as I asked for it medium but it seemed a bit tasteless.

beef is notoriously not good in Poland. The only place I have ever had a good steak is Adler or the London- and of course our grill at home with meat from Befsztek. I never order it anymore because I have been disappointed so many times.

I will also try Adler again but its not really what I'm after as its quite a noisy place and more for beer than for wine. Plus its round shape always made me feel a bit sick !

Weird. My friend's was medium rare and absolutely knocked spots off the stuff they have at B&W.

When it is good, it can be very very good. It's certainly a lot better than it was ten years ago!

If they still have the mushroom latte (unlikely, given the season) it is unmissable.

So I tried Downtown again and this time much better - very tasty strip steak (one of the cheaper items on the menu but still 60 zloty). Zielna was fully booked so will try it next time.

Try the beef from the "Beskidzki Wypas" the butcher at Polna street. They have Red Angus, Hereford and Salers from the only herd in POland. The meet is both aged and cut proper.
