Des Essientes: meant to evoke pleasant childhood memories. The two words are modeled the words "noggin" and "Oz".

No. As I said in post #24, it's meant to evoke Europeean sophistication. I've included a link to the creator's obit in the NYT and to wikipedia. In case you find reading original sources to be a chore.

Personally I don't buy ice cream often (though eating it daily since I'm serving on an Italian vessel at the moment) but when I do, it tends to be Zielona Budka from Grycan. Especially their pistachio. I've avoided Blikle since I bought some of their lavender and rosemary flavour. The best stuff I've ever had though has been from any one of a number of small family firms in the UK - Yorkshire seems to be particularly rich in ice cream makers. There's a firm in Holmfirth that do delicious rhubarb flavour.

What both Grycan and Blikle do (and closer to the original subject of chocolate) is a double chocolate ice-cream, with chocolate chips and a consistency closer to chocolate than ice-cream. One of them (I forget which) does a chocolate sorbet - quite bitter and dark but wonderful.

What brands of ice cream are there in Poland? Is chocolate a popular ice cream flavor, too? How about ice cream in general? I am a total chocoholic and prefer chocolate bars and chocolate cake over ice cream.

Is chocolate popular in Poland?

Lol, does a bear poop in the woods? My aunt from Lublin gave me a delicious box of Czekoladki chocolates. The YUMMY taste was similar to Godiva chocolates. I was selfish... I didn't share the candy with anyone :)

A sincere thanks PF, for putting up with me FIVE terrific years, muah!

They're mine, all mine :)

My cousins from Lithuania sent me the most exquisite chocolates last year for Christmas and they were made in Poland. They we dark chocolate filled with brandy liquor and were exquisite. I've looked for them in Polish markets in the U.S. and found the brand, but not those chocolates!

Very popular, but the best of the best, for me, is something from the Solidarność chocolate people (go on, get your own back pp). Chocolate-covered plums. You can get them in very attractive presentation tins, and shops sell them loose for about 23zł/kilo. They are fabulous. There are imitators who market inferior products, so beware. Accept nothing but Solidarność chocolate plums.

Could you possibly tell me some places in Krakow where I'd find them?

chocolate is very popular in Poland, its called czekolade. However we do not eat them the same way americans do - Polish chocalate like most of our food has a more raw taste and is less refined and has less sugars and preservatives.

I'd read on several Polish Food Blogs and sites that the "Twix Bar" was very popular in Poland as was a cake made with them. Here is a recipe translated for such a cake.

Enjoy!!
Michas

TWIX CAKE
ingredients

* 1 cup all-purpose flour
* 3/4 cup sugar
* 1/2 cup sour cream
* 1/4 cup butter, softened
* 1/4 cup water
* 1/2 tsp baking soda
* 1/2 tsp baking powder
* 1 egg
* 8 twix bars

directions

* 1

Heat oven to 350°. Grease and flour round pan (8“x 1.5” or 9“x 1.5”). Beat all ingredients except cookies in a medium bowl on low speed 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly. Beat on high speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Coarsely chop cookies. Stir into batter. Pour into pan.
* 2

Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until cake springs back when touched lightly in center. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pan and cool completely on wire rack.

you have got to be kidding me. prince polo, mars, twix, snickers are all popular here as are kinder chocolate. Poles think that if it comes from somewhere else it is better.
prince polo tastes like crap- totally refined and full of preservatives.

do your homework.
swiss chocolate is by far the best- and I don't mean the kraft made toblerone. I mean the wonderful chocolate made by chocolatiers.

Hmmm... I find the Solidarnosc chocolate a little waxy. Godiva is much silkier.

Merged: Polish Chocolate Market- HELP

Hi,

I am doing a university project related to Polish chocolate market. I'm interested in hearing the opinion about the tastes and preferences that Poles have about chocolate. Also, what do you think about the Polish market for luxury chocolate. Is it worth investing in, and are the preferences of Polish people becoming 'westernised'?

Thanks a lot in advance, I would really appreciate to hear your opinions!!
