Can i go mushroom hunting in the spring here?

Of course you can...its perfectly legal....I suppose what you mean is , are there any to be found in the spring...? Autumn is the traditional time for hunting them , and i am not sure if you can find them in the spring , but hang around , one of our Polish country experts will give you the information....

That's a saddle fungus or "strochok" in Russian. I guess it's the best mushroom to be picked in spring.

False morel mushrooms (eg, Gyromitra esculenta, Gyromitra ambigua, Gyromitra infula) can cause fatal poisonings. look them up as they are very, very similar and they can be deadly.

same with the other two mushrooms.. be very, very careful as there are similar ones out there that are deadly.

If you are not 100% sure its edible don,t think about eating them....some of the really deadly ones taste quite nice apparently....

ooo fun thank you. I will keep my eyes peeled. I use to go mushroom hunting in the states in the spring. I miss morels, but P-land does have way tastier ones:) Thanks so much everyone:)

there are many deadly mushrooms in PL.. not so many in the USA.. be very, very careful.. do spore prints on everything you're not 100% sure of.. and maybe even then, just to be sure.. there may be morel mushrooms in PL.. look and find out.. poles do not hunt mushrooms in the spring.

Just don't forget that not all morels are 100% edible. Most of them like the one pictured above are considered semi-edible in Russia. You may eat them (I ate them) but beforehand you gotta boil them and pour out a decoction for several times. I'm not sure if this worth it... that why I prefer a saddle fungus.

all regular morels are edible.. false morels on the other hand are not palatable. they are really no big deal to prepare.. the most common way is to soak them in salt water to kill bugs and 'clean' them.. then you slice and fry.. you can also dip them in flour or breading. that's it.. i've consumed thousands of them.

I ate a bunch of the ones Sasha has a pick of. And I fried them and putted them in a pasta dish, never got sick. Cool if I can find them here. I never got sick.

hello im from australia but i would like to know what are the best polish mushrooms found in poland? in australia we only have 'maszlaki' and 'rydze'. - does anyone of some really good polish mushrooms to be found in poland or in melbourne, australia? Thank you

Well it depends for what.. Personally: - the best ones for scrambled eggs would be "Kurki" - the best ones for "bigos" or "zalewajka" soup or souce would be "Borowiki", "Stojaki" and "Kurki" - the best fried ones with butter and salt would be "Rydze" - the best pickled ones, hm, again "Kurki" and "Podgrzybki" anyway, the best thing with mushrooms is the process of finding them

I've heard the piestrzenica is półtrująca (semi-poisonous) but is quite edible and nice if prepared properly. Dunno if that means pouring off the first water and then re-boiling or what?

The best Polish mushrooms for me are the "Prawdziwki"---They give lots of favour to any soup or dish being cooked.

When does it begin and end typically?

The mushroom harvesting season is in its high peak now (Mid September). Depending on the region it starts sometime at the middle of June and lasts till end of October.

However, many people report finding mushrooms in late November and the true experts claim that the mushroom season actually lasts year round, since there are groups of so-called "winter mushrooms", especially those growing on trees.

Example:
2005, December 10, Podkarpackie Voivodship: spotted a late colony of "rydze" (Lactarius deliciosus (L.) Pers.); some of them were half-frozen (minus two centigrades, light snow cover).

One of the latest mushrooms to be harvested belong to the genus Tricholoma (Polish "gąska" - a little goose). Most of the species are edible and some are very delicious, usually used in marinates. But watch it - some of its species are poisonous.

The season starts in late June and goes on to the end of October. There are a few later (10 November is a traditional date) but round about now is the best time, as Boletus mentions.

I think the initial question was about picking mushrooms in spring. So I assume she was specifically interested in picking morels or similar mushrooms peeping out in spring.

Late April-Early May is a good time for them, it may be June for highlands. Check the map of wild fires beforehand, that's where you're gonna get tons of morels.

Growing up in America, Every Sunday in the fall we would go to pick mushrooms.. We had an old Dziadek who was an expert on mushrooms, and inspected our mushrooms.. this went on for most of my childhood.. One days dziadek died. He was diagnosed as death by mushroom poisoning. None of us ever ate a wild mushroom ever since
