Polish cheese looks like string, is pale yellow, rubbery in texture, and slightly salty?

got onto pf later than expected because was at my friend paulinas house. she has just come back from poland and had brought me back a calendar for next year. she has also given me some cheese. havent tried or seen this before, so hopefully maybe someone can help. it looks like string, is pale yellow, very rubbery in texture, and slightly salty. already addicted to it. totally forgot to ask her what its called...lol

it's a variation of oscypek, the mountaineers' cheese, originally made of sheep and cow milk, the commercial version however is usually just cow milk. and instead of smoked it's often dyed with tea, still it's good, I usually buy it when I go to any supermarket, most of them have oscypek stands in the hall. The rubbery braids are my favourites.
The real oscypek is a regional product with protected name.

the bigger ones in the basket are oscypki too, just of different shape and texture, if you've visited Kraków, you must have seen them.

Where in Krakow, in your opinion, is the best oscypek sold? I agree, a little wit goes a long way =)

this is definitely the one! paulina gave me so much of it, i took it into work today. everyone thought it was home made spaghetti,until i enlightened them. not everyone liked it though, some people thought it was too salty, and others thought it wasnt really cheese ! not my problem, i keep raiding the fridge...lol :)

A Polish poster will correct me but the main brand is sth like Janosik or Janosek from Mlekovita. It's the stringy variety. I have the main variety in my fridge at the moment. It's salty alright :)

look at strzyga photo. to jest sto procent numer jeden.. but i dont think it has been dyed with tea. my friend paulinas father lives in the mountains, and has a farm. i think it is home made

For me, the only good Polish cheese is Oscypek. Damn I want some right now :) The Polish store I go to has some cheeses, but many aren't even Polish, like "polski edam." Real Edam cheese is Dutch.

my friend dominika always buys edam from our local polish shop. correct me if i am wrong but she explained that in poland you only have white or yellow cheese,and the flavour is mild.i once gave her some strong cheddar to try, and she absolutely hated it. am sure there must be many more varieties, but maybe she ate regional cheese only (she comes from very small village on ukraine border)

yea, the cheeses in Poland are mainly yellow and white. Polish grocery stores sell all different types of cheeses (when I went last summer in Poland), but only a few of them are Polish. Like Twarog, but I'm not crazy about quark cheese.

Oh, the milkiness of oscypek is sumptuous! It just crumbles off and almost melts in your mouth. Oscypek is to cheese what a Fuller's Pale Ale is to beer :) Sth to be savoured and appreciated! I've just eaten a bite as I picked some up from M1 in Zabrze. I had some grilled bits there so I got some smaller pieces too. Taste heaven!

I get Zamosc smoked cheese from my local Polish shop which comes in a big slab but they slice it for me.It is delicious on some rye bread.Is this another type of Oscypek cheese?
It is pale and slightly rubbery,but I would not say it is salty.
