What is interesting polish national dishes (PND) that most of poles think about when asked this question, are not really originally from poland. So for the answer you must look in the north east of our country. I personally don't know the answer, but i know that in the present you can call PND many things: bigos, pierogi are at the top of the list. But there are much, much more, depends on in which region of Poland you will ask.

those three and a few i can't think of right now are the PND.

there is no single dish that can be anybody's national dish.. if you ask the english, you'll get variety too..

LOL - a friend of mine, Gosia (Polish btw...) doesn't do the Carp thing either, on account of her childhood memories of her mum getting live carp, getting to know them as, er pets, and then having to eat them at christmas time....

Bigos is sort of the "official" national dish, but people don't eat it very often, maybe a couple of times a year on average.

"Kotlet schabowy" a breaded and pan-fried pork chop is more the real national dish in that people eat it a lot more often.

What does it even mean "national dish?" Something the Poles invented? Something they/we eat most often or something we most vigorously celebrate? Even with that said there will never be one right answer. I think all the above have provided a vast array of Poles think of their own food.

Btw, it's great!
I'm hungry :(

Yeah, maybe people may have been put off by the name, rak. It means cancer too as many will know.

It's a delicacy.

Poland could do with some creative ideas with sausages. U know, we have bangers n'mash. The Poles have such a range of sausages, don't just grill them in oil, use their versatility!!

pickled herring is really a jewish thing not polish but since there were many, many jews in PL before the wars, poles now eat the hell out of them.

JUst for the knowledge: The main Polish Jewish foods are:
Cholent (beans, potatos, barley and meat cooked before sabbath and then left to stew slowly on a fire over night and eaten the next day.)
Holopches (stuffed cabbage)
Gefilte Fish (originally carp stuffed with chopped fish, but now ususally just the stuffing)
Chrain (ground horseradish, usually mixed with red beets) used as a sauce for the gefilte fish
Kishke (stuffed intestine)
P'tchah (jelled calves hooves with pepper and eggs - looks ugly but tastes good)
Tzimmes (sweet carrot pudding)
Compot (fruit soup - served cold)

Matyjasz:

kogel mogel

There's a thing called "gogel mogel" made from eggs that's supposed to be good for a sore throat. Is that what you mean? Or is that a kind of Kugel (noodle or potato pudding)?
