I like the element of SURPRISE! :) ahahaha!

This would be easier.. If you knew where they were.
You could sneak up easier than hunting for them.. Lol

And you cant see who is in a thread when you are in it..
Only from outide..

There might be 'friends' on-line you want to chat with, but
what can be better than chatting with people you don't know.

There are no strangers in this world, only friends we haven't met yet
(and a few enemies if you go for that sort of thing)

An unneccesary idea IMHO.

In a sense - yes. However, they won't know if I am here or not. Someone PM's me and I don't want to know about it, I'll delete and ignore it. If they keep doing it I'll click on the report button and say why I am reporting it. It's not the same as being hassled really. If I was online and someone knew it and wanted to hassle me they'd bug and bug me.

you can do both, there's nothing wrong with catching up with old friends and making new ones at the same time ;)

If someone knows I am online and not answering they might continually bug me!!!

I think that's a very good point. Let's say one of the members posted a translation request and s/he can see there's a historically helpful translator online. Now if the translator didn't have time or pleasure to do the translation, the requesting member would think they are ignoring him/her, keep "bumping up" posts, or keep sending PMs to the translator. And that wouldn't help build a good relationship.

Since it ain't going to happen, I'll say this anyway.

There must be many people like me who log-in, check a few posts and then wander off to do something different. All without logging-off. Any search or request will only reveal the last post. It won't tell you if they are paying attention or using the forum.

Yes, me for one. I've only just got into the habit of logging off! I used to get leave it logged in...imagine how confusing that would be to other members if it said I was logged in 24/7...!

Sometimes I accidentally post on a topic when I'm trying to lurk.
I just can't keep me big mouth shut.

Anyway, I say it is a silly idea. Things work as they are. You find where people are quite easily and if you're intertested in the discussion, you join in. If someone's not posting, their presence does not need to be known.

You're welcome. And believe me I know about most available forum features out there and tried them out; in the end the most user-friendly, useful, and important ones have been implemented here, I hope.

I've got Windows Vista, so I'm permanently logged onto PF when ever I'm online, but may well be looking at a different sight

OK, but how would it improve the quality of discussions? :)

In my view it wouldn't!! If you want to have other levels of conversation with a particular person, then communicate in a different way. Why should you know when a certain person is actually logged onto the forum ? What if the person doesn't want to reply to your thread there and then ? Just 'cos they are logged on it doesn't mean they are available. This is a forum not a 'chat line' lol. Also, I'd think it would have the opposite effect and stop people logging on to just read first and then maybe reply later on when they have more time.......

I hope it doesn't change......
